So I was tired of the old outdated VTR dash a while back. Even the guys who review the bike hated it the 1st gen and hated it even more on the 2nd gen.
One of my lifes goals was to have a digital big speedo and a GAS GUAGE!!. So I bought some VTR wiring harness stuff and assembled a harness that I could make the dash plug and play almost.
I grafted a CBR600RR float into the fuel tank (yes I actually did it. Plastic welding came in handy). I then had to change the temp sensor and replace it with the CBR unit in the coolant.
Now I have a digital dash and FUEL GUAGE!!!
Just wanted to show this old vid. I live in NYC so want/need conspicuity thus the mirror running lights and double turn sigs all around.
But, it's a dry heat. That's not even heat by AZ standards, is it?
I've been dealing with 115% Illinois humidity all weekend. That's hot at any temp.
Yes, for some locations in AZ that's not close to hot. Around where I live it will just crest 100 or so this time of year. At about 12-15% humidity not so bad either.
Since it's complete as far as the projects I wanted to do to it, I bought the VTR a stable mate with plenty of stuff to fix on.
1985 Honda XR350R. It runs and it will get to those hard to reach places where the Superhawk shouldn't go.
So after not riding for about a year due to toasted R/R - Got her back up about 5 weeks ago.
I've had a great August so far
Rode up to Vermont to meet my nephew aka IP (International Playboy), who took me to Montreal in his small Jeep to see Metallica - 95% via secondary roads thru Poconos & Catskills / Adacks to Ticonderoga Ferry to Vt.
Ferry Ride to Vt
IP lives about 500' from Mad River Glen - Rt 17 is awesome - my 1st time riding in this area of Vermont.
Mad River Glen - Rt. 17
Metallica was awesome in the Snake Pit - so close to band inside the Pit - big Kudos to IP for hooking me up
Lars & Robert Robert & James James
Did about 430 miles up to Vt - got back home the following Wednesday - then went to Philly to see my other nephew play agaisnt the Feagles at the Linc & hook up with friends & family. Then rode with buddy up to New Platz NY to meet other friends for a show in Woodstock. Rt 44/55 over the 'Gunks didn't disappoint - always great. Not too many pics from this ride as we were late to meet up.
Liver not happy with me after these 10 daze of partying.
So in August I put on like 1200 miles in 2 weeks - VTR turned 72k miles! (though over the 21 yrs didn't ride for about 3 yrs due me being broken - cage accident & recent R/R)

That's good mileage. Those tix had to be salty as hell! Quite a hook-up indeed. It's been a year of concerts for me as well. Les Claypools Fearless Flying Frog Brigade, KIX, Black Flag, and I have meet and greet's with Les next month in Philly. That took all the football tix money so probably no game this year.

Do you carry a small can of chain lube?
Les & His Beavers Tour?
I did have a small can of lube - but it was done - so I grabbed a can and cleaned & lubed chain before trip up to New Platz, NY. Needs and another shot again. But too hot to ride this week. Rode Sunday up to Shamokin on 125 - still great.

Picked up a VIP only poster and had it framed. 👍🏼
I used to run 125 at least once a year for a while. Haven’t been up there in several though. Takes me an hour of slab to get to it. You hit Goldmine Road since you’re close? I always went up and down that at least twice while there.
I don't know Goldmine - sounds like I need to go back.
My usual roads to there - as I'm coming from East are Hawk Mtn, 895 (mostly straight) into Pine Grove, then Molleystown Rd (this is a great road - awesome pavement - just before 125 - and the Pirates don't know it - but they look good riding bar to bar - shameful)
I think I'll ride there on Wednesday - work is slow & overrated.
And in a month I'll be watching rugby in France and riding scooters drunk in Portugal...I'll just tell em I ride a Hardley in America and thats what we do.
Happy winter!
Nice ride yesterday. About 80 miles. Clear, dry, no wind, almost no traffic on one of my favorite roads and about 45*.
Sure am liking my heated gear.
Yes, yes I know that that temp is "not cold", but I get cold easily.
Is that a high tech protective coating on the crankcase?
Foh Sho
I have a valve cover leak but when I check the earl level it always seems fine. At some point - I'll pull it apart and change the gaskets - or pay local Hawk owner that is a shade tree mech to do it - As I suspect I'll be too lazy...
Happy New Year to All - Keep those Hawks humming along!
Just changed front pads that have been sitting in a drawer for 2 years. Was going to change the rotors but mine are fine. Not warped. Plus the cost of new rotors is crazy to me.
New EBC HH on the 2001 Gixxer calipers.
But the pads that were on there were actually not bad. Can't remember how old they are. Probably could have got another 2,000 to 3,000 mi out of em.
Feels good to have a firm brake handle now..
Going riding upstate NY
Parts have been on the shelve for a few months. Now that "cold" weather is coming....
Ebay specials, meant for a Tenere 700. A little surgery on the brackets was required. Brembo masters made it possible.
I've been always running hand guards here in NYC but had to go with Artic cat snomobile units since they were large enuff to keep my hands in a still air pocket.
It looks like you have the gsxr mirrors. I really wanted to make those work but couldnt get them to stay stable. How did you account for the different angle of the base?
I really like the mirrors and built in lights which I made into running lights but I couldnt see a thing in them due to vibrations

Have been wanting to do this for a while. As you well know keeping the slipstream off the hands is crucial for cold (cool for me) weather riding. The shape isn't everything I would have preferred, but they work. Cost was low and fitment was simple.
Early in my ownership I replaced the mirrors with an aftermarket set meant for a Fazer. While they eliminated the elbow view, I couldn't get the mirror housing to a satisfactory position. Ended up cranking the housing so much it ruined the joint. Never occurred to me to modify the mounting bracket as I was using the stock SH mounting brackets.
Using just the mounts from the Fazer mirrors (they have the same bolt spacing as the stock mounts) I filed both the Gixer arms and Fazer mounting bracket to achieve the desired angle. Also replaced the connection hardware holding the two parts together.
They do vibrate a bit, the right a lot more than the left. Not enough to matter to me.
Overall I have been very happy with the setup. Having the running lights up high and spread out a bit helps with making me more visible.
