carb sync question

So I just did the needle shim .020, TPS (the top and middle pin at 500) and removed PAIR. I also installed vacume pick up for the front cyl and Tee into rear by the fuel valve. I made my yard stick and ATF symc gauge and was very excited about smooth running hawk.

I also found K&N filter with misssing plugs and the small foam filters for the diaphragms. Plugs are on the way, but I am flying out to the island in a day so I attempted to sync carbs with the airbox open. The bike runs not so well. I do need the back pressure created by the airfilter/snorkel for the carbs to act right?

To close the airbox I would need the plugs for the diaphragms (to isolate any vacum created on the carb side of the air filter, which I don't have. I will make the foam filters that are missing from air filter foam.

Is my thinking correct on this one? Thanks.

Yes you do need to have the airbox fully assembled in order for the bike to run right so you can sync the carbs.
