First Ride - Not Charging
Hey all, the snow cleared up enought to take the SH out for a short spin. Wow. This thing pulls hard from any rpm, awesome. Unfortunatly, this is the first time i have had this thing running with out a jump box and i don't think I'm getting anything out of my charging system.
I haven't looked into the cause yet, but I have notice that the r/r on this thing is finned. If I remember correctly, I have read on here that the r/r on the stock SH is not finned. Am I correct in assuming that the PO replace it with one from another bike??

yes you can assume that. it's either an upgraded one, or one from an r6/r1 yamaha.

Yep. Good assumption. Any idea how long the R/R has been on it?
It's also possible that cells on the battery are bad and not holding a charge. Most of the auto parts stores can also load test motorcycle batteries, so have that checked first.
One other thing to check...I have been having starting problems over the winter with the bike being cold. I checked the specifics on the battery that was in it and discovered that it's only rated for 180 CCA. Obviously the previous owner did not pay attention to the requirements since it needs 210 CCA to turn over properly.

It all depends on what year the bike is as to weather the stock R\R has fins or not but if you are only getting 12.5 VDC then either the R\R is bad or the stator is shot. I would check the R\R as it is the most likely cause.

steel wool and a lot of patience. solvents will work (i've heard of using baking soda and then water) but you'll still have to scrub a bit. Make sure everything is disconnected haha, and use some dielectric grease you can get at autozone or whatever to prevent future problems

Try a flat jewelers file with a strip of 1000 grit wrapped around it for the male terminals. The same 1000 grit folded several times about the same size as the spade works on the female terminals.

So other then not holding a charge were there any other symptoms?
Like your gauges stop working... or eventual failure of the bike.
I personally think we are over thinking things and should start by ruling out the battery. On my hawk it has never registered more then 12.5 volts at the battery when running and I don't have any charging issues.
