i believe thats do to improperly balanced carbs. something to do with the way the cylinders fire, one will play catch up and cause the plates to chatter. had the same problem with my srad, carb sync got rid of it.
I'd start by checking the clutch springs, if they are worn you get noise... It takes some effort to damage the clutch on a VTR, but it's entirely possible to mess up the cluthc basket if you work at it a bit...
BTW, nykuryu... The slides on the VTR carbs usually clatter a bit at idle or barely of idle... That's really nothing that a carbsync can change since it's down to the mere size of the things (Those carbs are big, really big for CV carbs on bikes)... But having said that, you really cant sync your carbs to many times...
Well, since it goes away when pulling in the clutch, it's most defenitely the clutch, not the carbs...

better pull it out when i get the time and make sure its all in the right order , just wondered if there was a typical hawk cause for a knock on tickover in neutrel goes completely when held in and its a typical storm clutch to use , before i pull the case

What type of oil are you running in the bike? Just asking because I have heard ( I haven't run one myself) that they can be picky about what type of oil you run ( If I remember correctly, they don't like synthetics)
I had this problem many years ago... As I remember the VTR had ~12k-15k mi. Turned out to be a clutch basket or clutch basket bearing (sorry but I can't remember exactly). The dealer's service department had never seen the problem B4. Kinda sounded like a rod knock, but it went away when the clutch was pulled it.
The dealer tried to warranty it for me, but Honda wouldn't cooperate.
