my weekend

engine swap this weekend. long story, but after a long, drawn out rebuild job on a used engine with lots of personal emergency interuptions I'm finally getting it back into the bike to replace the stock motor. Heads were ported in addition to the cams and HC pistons during the rebuild. Can't wait to see how it runs - I'm out of town for 10 days before I can finish it. makes me want to cancel the trip!

thanks. this spring I'll get some dyno results and post them. the cbx is an 81 - for trips. I had a 79 when they were new - hard to believe how far superbikes have come from 25 years ago. I think it might be next winter's engine project though!

jamesVTR. I notice pretty similar mods- I'm looking for some good starting points for jetting with the ported head till I can get to the dyno. I have a stock filter still. appreciate any help.

Day-ummm, did you deduce that from the 3rd pic in the first post? I had a 79 CBX and would never had notice it in the background. LOL Good eyes.

What was wrong with your stock motor?

Man having those straps to hang your frame up sure would have been nice to have when I tore my bike down! I might have to find something like that when I swap out my engine soon. Didnt know you didnt have to remove the sub frame!!!

stock motor was fine - in fact if this works out OK I'll sell it. I just knew the project was going to go in steps when I had time starting last fall believe it or not, and didn't want to lose bike time so found a used one cheap to rebuild. THe stock only has about 4K on it.

the hoist I bought at a local northern tool and supply store. Made in china, but seems very sturdy for about $120. folds up when not in use. I got the 1ton but they have all ranges. I didn't want to go into the rafters and hook up something - though that would have been slick and gets completely out of the way when not in use.

I would be kinda curious to see what kinda HP it is gonna put down. What kinda cams did you put in? If it proves to put down good HP, I am thinking about upgrading to the HC JE pistons next fall. My next goal is to reach 120 RWHP.

they were stage 1 cams from moriwaki - someone posted some on ebay right now - priced quite high though. I'll repost when I finally get it tuned and dyno'd

For those of us with finished garages with no overhead rafters available, you can either use the garage door rails to hang a tie down from but if that isn't in a good spot or seems iffy to you, one can easily and cheaply build their own.

Go to the plumbing section of a home supply store and get cheap galvanized water pipes (3/4 inch or so). Make two "T" stands and run a pipe crosswise between them.

Personally, I'd make the bottom T about twice as long than in this pic. You can disassemble it for storage.

Update. Finally returned to the project after beign away. Got all the tubes, hoses and extra parts re-attached, even had the shock serviced while I was away. And the good news it, it started. After some initial running problems from both pilot jets clogged it now runs great. I have a DJ kit and went with 180/185 mains, needle at 5th position, 48 pilots. AFter a couple of heat/cool cycles I tried it on the road very briefly (its only 40 here today!) and it runs really great. Jetting is pretty close. New shift pro star is very slick. I'm going to break it in when we get a good day and then to the dyno and will post those. Thanks to those for the initial jetting recommendations also.
