Hinging the VTR seat for easy access

As you all know, taking the seat on and off the vtr is not the best design.

I was thinking of removing the rear metal hooks and fixing a hinge to the front of the seat so it lifts up from the back like a car boot. the locking mechanism shouldnt need to be changed..

Has anyone done this before?

You'd have to attach the hinge to the tank where your ***** would be (assuming you're a dude) otherwise you'd have some major interference by other stuff. Not very feasible in my mind. Have you tried filing down the nubbies on the rear hooks on the seat? That makes it a lot easier to remove. Do a search, as the answer is on here.

In addition to Hawkriders suggestion, lube the key lock cable and pivot points with some dry lube or silicone spray.

Once it is clean, lubed and adjusted.. the seat darn near flys off once you turn the key. If yours does not, it's not the design causing the issue.

Nah my lock works fine. The seats goes on and off fine. But you cant say the just flipping it up wouldn't be an improvement.

Actually i can say.....
Sorry no, Have not looked into it, as it would annoy me to no end, be in the way and a terrible idea for me and my bike.

Good luck, show us how you end up doing it.. who knows, someone else might want to do the same thing one day...and it'll be your How To post they find

Hinge will be hidden under the seat and I would still want to be able to remove the seat completely and easily.

I can't see how this could have any annoying drawbacks, but I guess we will see.

Ah, hawk rider I just Saw a pic of what you are describing. Yeah that would make the seat operation a lot better.
I'll do that mod, but I still think flipping the seat up would be nicer than having to remove it completely. Thanks for the helpful tip

I guess this is the thread hawk rider is referring to.

Sound like simply unbolting the hooks is the way to go.

Well perhaps because you ADDED to the concept you first posted about.
Yes that would make it more of a useable MOD.

The hinge like you described in your first post, not so much.

As you describe your design plan now.. Better.
Still a solution for a problem I do not personally see or have with my bike.. But thats why we all MOD to our own needs, not each others.

Lol are you one of those guys that always has to be right?

I didn't 'describe' the hinge at all. I thought it would be obvious that the seat would still need to be removable, or else i agree it could be annoying.

I clarified it just for you

Relax, it's just the internet haha

LOL, no, not concerned with always being right...
But folks that can not describe what it is they want and expect others to read their minds are annoying..

Seriously.. you're right it's the internet.. and those reading your request for help can only respond after reading what YOU WROTE,,, having no way to know in your mind you have other wants, design parameters that YOU DID NOT WRITE.

lots of folks here that are willing to help, but you have to tell us what it is you want, not make us guess.

In any case.. good luck with your project, show us what you end up with.

Thanks for pointing out that the link didn't paste, i fixed that.

The rest of your post gave me a good laugh, thanks

All i asked was has anyone put a hinge on a seat before... You imagined in your own mind that it would be permanently stuck on there, and decided it would be terrible.

Perhaps YOU should have used your words and said why you thought it would be terrible, instead of expecting others to read your mind, and realize it was just because you thought the seat would be stuck there.

But thanks for the good luck, i'll post results.

A hinged seat IMO opinion would be a redundant system to gain access to what is already accessible.

I think it would **** you off the first time the seat fell closed and slammed you in the back of the head.....

It is pretty easy to get the seat off will a little adjustment and more practical, IMHO, just to take the seat off if you need in there.

The one thing the attached hinged seat would get me I like, is not placing the seat on the ground as I hang a helmet, use my jacket cable to lock up jackets or bags... Im always concerned the edge of the seat cover will get cut, the seat will fall over and I'll damage the cowl.

But since 2005 and 25000 or so miles just a few hundred at a time at most.. I've done ok with a seat that comes off very easily..

Stillllllllllll I suppose I could look at the idea and see if anything comes to me...

I removed the hooks and strap. Very easy removal of seat now. And have not encountered any issues. I remove seat often, and was always a pain in butt but now it's too easy.

I unbolted the hooks today. Will see how i go over the next few rides and see if its still annoying enough for me to bother making a hinge
