Temperature gauge and red light
Howdy all!
Got a 99 VTR yesterday and I'm pretty excited about it. I've been wanting one for a quite a few years so it's finally happened. Mines a good example with about 30k on it. Suspension is going to get updated first. It's toast.
The engine is running well. It has 2 bros cans on it and it's pretty dang loud. I plan to ride it on the track for the most part as I have other machines that do my street work.
Anyway, little red light on the temp gauge, comes on when the key is on and does not go out when the motor fires up. That seems to be a fault. The gauge itself registers about 1/3 of the entire scale and stayed there even after running it at 6500 rpms or so for a few miles.
I only ran it fora total of 25 miles and there were no signs of overheating.
I'm going for a shop manual soon but am curious now about what might be going on.
Nice forum! Looking forward to hanging out to talk Thunder Chicken.

Thanks for the post. I can't believe there's not an owners manual in digitial form some place. Maybe I'm using the wrong search term, 'vtr1000 owners manual'.
Key off...
Key on... Based on your response, I'm guessing it's not supposed to be on.
well, I'll be... I found a Honda service manual on line this morning. No mention of that little bugger so I guess it's safe to assume it's just the instrument backing light shining through.

Yeah that is just a odd colored light someone installed.
As for the service manual, see the little bar that is labeled "search"? well it is your friend......

No, there are three backlights in the cluster (which it appears that this is what the OP was refering to)
It does look like it's colored different. If the last owner replaced them with red, I'd keep it. Red is better on the eyes for night vision.
