Question Starter moaning on hot start

Wondering if anyone else has had a problem with the starter moaning loudly during a hot start. It seems to function perfectly when cold but after I ride it a bit, turn it off and start it again soon, it makes a loud moaning noise. It still starts ok, just noisy and annoying. Thoughts? Experiences?

My 98 is doing the same thing. Anyone else have this? Is the starter going bad?

Yes, its dying. but you can squeeze out some more life if you partially disassemble the starter motor, blow out any dust and debris, and put a small dab of graphite on the bushings.
Keep the stuff away from the brushes and contacts though.
Otherwise get ready for a starter motor purchase.

They are pretty easy to take apart and clean. The brushes will last a very long time, but since the units are sealed the dust from that brush wear has no place to go except to contaminate the rest of the motor. Take it apart, clean it, lube it, and put it back in. If anything all you lost was $2 for contact cleaner and 2 hours of your time.
