I am actually not certain if it was missing I will have to ask George at the shop. I know they had to make one when they changed my tire. Since then my brakes have been great and the ride is more stable.
FYI speedo clocks are off to as much as 15% fast on this bike without a healer.

My bike actually did catch on fire due to charging system issues (see shorai battery fire thread). I changed the stock R/R to the R1 unit and noticed that it was running up to 130 degrees + inside my custom tail. I relocated it to above the radiator so that it is now air cooled, and it runs at close to ambient air temperature as measured with an infrared thermometer (so long as I am moving). The stock location of the R/R sucks as well, even for the R1 unit due to lack of air flow to cool it.
If there had been any damage to the wiring plug from the original concern that caused the replacement in the first place, it is likely that the high resistance caused by the damage to the plug caused an even larger heat issue. It would have started in one or more of the three yellow stator wires at the plug.

I gotta say, though, that little ouchie is not really grounds for this big of a deal. Peal the plastic off, repair/ replace the burned wires as necessary, relocate or vent your R/R and move on. This is basic stuff, and the damage to your bike looks pretty minimal.

There is a good link on the R/R in the knowlege objects at the top of the forum. Good luck!

Geico just came out, cut me a check for 201$ EST for 701$
They are only paying for the tail.
The electrical system is my own business.
Thanks for the information. when I looked at it it did seem like a poor placement choice for something that would get hot. It may not seem like a big deal but it was for me! lol What model r1 RR should I be looking for? Today I measured the voltage from my battery and got 12.5, buttt the clocks didnt power on with the key. No fuses are burnt out.

Geek- did you check the main fuse? It's not in the fuse box, but it could have fried...

Any of the R1 R/Rs will work. If you get the one with two smaller connectors in the back you can use the eastern beaver plugs:
R/R Connectors

This is the R/R that will work for it: (don't pay this price though!)
NEW VOLTAGE REGULATOR RECTIFIER YAMAHA YZF R1 2002 2003 - eBay (item 230545503486 end time Mar-31-11 06:01:24 PDT)

Otherwise, if you get the one with one large connector (uses all the same wires, just all in one plug). I had no electrical experience prior and managed to do this in under an hour:

Thanks for the info! I did not check it but will when I get off. I jumped my car yesterday and the alternator shot smoke so I have to ride my bicycle to DAP to get a replacement... seriously. after that I will get started on the bike.
The wiring coming out needs to be replaced too. The geico guy I just noticed included the tail lights in the estimate how kind.

Haha that's a regulator for a 1985 Honda Sabre!

Shindengen sh541-12 4.2 regulator rectifier - Google Search

My guess is that this was the culprit as it's the older type of regulator...

I'm not going to praise Go-Eco whatever company, but in their defense this would be difficult to catch in a safety inspection unless they spent $1000 in labor per bike back-checking every little component number, inspecting diagrams to make sure all the parts were stock, look for missing mini-filters, etc. Buying used is a roll of the dice...

How they handle the aftermath is a different story, and if they don't want to be humane about it then it's their loss in the long run...

The RR ground was bolted on the a bolt holding the shending RR in place so it was grounded to itself.
I put a stock one on just now and the bike is running. Grounded to an empty hold to the left of the RR.

Here is a teaser video of what I got from the work today

connector:
R/R Connectors

fits any yamaha r1 or r6 r/r with two plugs on the side:

2005 YZF- R1 VOLTAGE REGULATOR YZF R1 YZFR1 - eBay (item 200589584525 end time Mar-28-11 19:35:15 PDT)

Or buy a Yamaha one with one plug in the bottom and put some terminals on the bottom like I pictured a few posts above:

If you're buying the r1/r6 regulator with the two plugs, watch out for ones with REALLY tall fins- they have a hard time fitting in the Superhawk's tail. Just look in the pics and you'll notice- they look very large

Tall fins are nothing a hack saw cant take care of...I cut the top and bottom corners off my TL1000 R/R to clear the fairing. Works fine

Hacksaw! that is brutal. My under tail is terrible btw I dunno who made this thing.

I have a new issue. While connecting my turn signals there was a spark at the large box. it burnt 2 fuses then after replacing them I left the turn signals disconnected and plggued in the tails lights.... nothing..

Got some 7443 bulbs from the auto store and now I have at least a running brake light, but no actual brake light. I think it is a matter of tracking down the right bulb locally.
