Gout has crossed my mind. It is swollen and hurts in the joint like you can't believe. It even hurts to even touch the foot. I gotta talk to my Dr.

It does, but it's still very common.

Gout, been there had that, took the meds... and no shot required.
If it is the first time ask about a uric acid test...to confirm, and colchicine is what i have had best luck with... first pill to relieve is a day day and half at worst.

Nope not this guy, no changes in diet at all..... other than avoiding shellfish.
I end up with one attack a year or 18 months... I know it's coming and start downing colchicine at the first sign...

On Saturday I hobbled out to the shop and got the clutch side assembled, got the stator cover on and the swing arm in. I also hooked up the shock linkage and started plugging in some wires. It is looking more and more like a motorcycle again. Today (Sunday) I went riding with the shop sponsored group ride. The weather was cool and damp but at least it didn't rain on us. It was good to get out and ride.

Looking good. I would swap out the stock R/R with a Mosfet unit when you can.

It's on my list of must-do items. I may ride it a bit first however just to see how it goes.

I have been taking my time (possibly dragging my feet a little) making sure my cable, hose, vacuum line and wire routing is all good.

So what would make you think it was not oil starvation? Is there a shred of evidence against it? I would figure that was the first suspect.

Oh, it's oil starvation all right. Nothing can do this kind of damage like oil starvation. I just don't know why it starved for oil. I also expected to see damage to the cam bearings, due to a lack of oil, that I did not see. Strange!

Hmm. Last racebike I sold to my garagemate at the track, he drained the oil on race wknd but didn't have oil. He bravely stored the bike til next race. When next weekend came, he suited up and went out for practice. With no oil.

Bikes don't inherently have oil. That is user input. If you forget, then things don't work as well or for as long.

I have followed your posts with great interest. I recently got a 98 Superhawk. It seems to have a heavy knock in the engine. I have checked the timing chains and cam timing. Were you able to pull the rod caps before you removed the engine from the bike?

If you read this thread carefully, you'll see that he was able to pull the rod caps before engine removal.

I pulled the head and was able to tell, with certainty that the bearing was shot. Watch the video. It may be that your knock will not be as pronounced as mince since the PO removed the rod bearing shell. You can see, in the video, in the last part where I am showing the crank, a view down the cylinder straight through to the ground. The pan is off and the crank and rods are exposed. Yes, it is tricky getting the rod caps off because they are on opposite sides of the crank pin and there is an oil galley in your way.

From my experience, if it is the rods or mains that engine is going to have to come apart. Timing chains do not make a heavy knocking sound.

By the way, bearing failures do happen sometimes. I was talking with the service manager at the dealership. They had a guy with a CBR1000 that during an regular oil change showed gold flakes and then developed a bottom end rattle. Aparantly the guy took good care of the engine maintanance wise but ran it hard? I don't know. Stuff happens.

Fix it and ride it.

Thanks for the reply. Looks like I will probably have to pull it apart, will cause I really like the bike.

I really like it when people arent like i am gonna part it out or sell it when its broken and fix it..... also good luck maico,

@ smokinjoe : hahaha thats fucked up.... but anybody that pulls a racebike out storage after a season racing and go's racing next season without even checking the oil than he would run in to himself at one point maybe not oil related....

I told my wife last night that in reality, I paid too much for the bike and if it were anyone else it would have been a parts bike. I wanted a motorcycle too much when I was a kid to ever want to destroy one now.

I got the carbs, the radiators, the air cleaner and the tank back on and it was the moment of truth.

See video.

I stopped it because it was smoking. I had oiled the header joints for smooth assemble and that was burning off. It sounds pretty good to me but my wife listened to the video and asked if it was supposed to sound that "rattley."

Seems good to me. Sounds like mine.

You always get smoke for a bit with a new motor build.

Not smoke but SMOKE! Smoke from the outside of the pipe and smoke from inside the pipe. Gotta raise the door to get some air.

I warmed her up and synced the carbs. That was the easiest carb sync I have ever done. I had added vacuum line from the front and the rear so it was just a question of plug and play. I used a flexible 1/4" drive driver handle and was able to tune with ease.

The engine sounds noisy to my ear but I have not heard one run in a long time.

I have John Goodman lined up to play me in the story of my life, if I ever do anything worth making a movie about.

So two thoughts.
  1. The VTR is a loud/klanky motor IMHO
  2. Your Motor in the Vid "sounds" louder / klanker then what i would expect..

The problem is, way too many variables....so gauging sound by a Video tape. .. sound reflection ... angle and distance of mic, ect ect..

Do your due diligence.. pull cam covers and confirm cam chain tension, check valve clearances, check cam timing, drop the oil check it and filter for ANY sign of metal...If all that returns no faults found.. ride that sucker.

Nice job Jim. I might have to ride out to your shop and bribe you to help me do my valve adjustment and tensioners. By the way, do you know where i can get some new exhaust gaskets? i need to replace mine when i wrap my pipes.
