Jetting Recommendations

Alright. I think its about that time to rejet. I live in New Britain CT, Elevation is around 200ft above sea level. Im running K+N Air filter and Jardine RT-1 slip ons. Whats the recommended set up? Im assuming I will be purchasing the Dynojet kit.

Well, per my consumer opinion - it sounds like I hear people perfering the Factory Pro jet kits. Now, my '01 'Hawk ran like complete crap with the way the previous owner had it jetted with the DynoJet kit. Mind you he had the Jardine pipes you have - and their still in use now. The settings were 185/190 for the mains, stock pilot jets - but the pilot screws turned out three turns (In my humble opinion: I say NOT to play with the pilot screws unless you have access to an inductive clamp multimeter tach' that you can accurately adjust the pilot screws with after your mod's. Otherwise your just going to throw your idle at take off throttle performance completely out of whack.), and the needles set to the fifth clip, with one shim. In addition to the junk settings it took awhile for the bike to warm up. Clearly this was a rich mixture setting - and most of us aren't trying to break the sound barrier - obviously it was configured for high RPM useage. On top of that, we bought our V'twins for their low end torque. My throttle response was just complete crap and the power band incredibly flat. Finally, this bike I have came installed with a K&N air filter - I now have the stock air filter installed.
I've gone completely back to stock now except for the Jardine pipes, which I repacked in November. When I purchased the bike, I didn't have any additional DynoJet carb' parts to play with as the previous owner didn't forward those to me. I'm happy with my settings for the time being except for having to correctly dial in the pilot screws.
I'm sure others here will have some constructive opinion for you with their experience.
Cheers.

So is the Factory Pro kit easier to install? Or the parts in the kit fit the Hawk better? Im sure it will come with the factory recommendations, but I just wanted to hear what the Vets. here would recommend. Thanks for your input Spaz', I just have a little stumble at about 4.5-5k RPM when accelerating. Any more information is appreciated.

I have a DynoJet kit with TWo Brothers slip ons and it runs perfect, and I mean perfect. I have rejetted many bikes and the Dynojet kit is well sorted out. I know there are people who say FactoryPro is better and I know owners who have had both and like DynoJet better. I have a link to one such sight on my other PC at work and will post it Monday so you can read the comments and see the two dyno charts (one Facrory one DynoJet on a Fire Storm), They are the about the same to install. I do know guys who say Factory has a midrange problem and then to I know people who refer to DynoJet as DynoJunk. All I can tell you is that I have installed over a dozen DynoJet kits and was able to get excellent results. JIM

Yes, Factory kit is easier to install and easier to tune. I also think they work better with the K&N. I can give you baseline settings. I have the same mods as you.

Jim, no drilling of the slides, and Factory jet sizes correspond to Keihin (stock) sizes.

Gems,

182/185 f/r main jet
stock idle jets
needle clips second from bottom
mixture screws 2.25 turns out

After you're done jetting, reinstall the carbs and do a good synchronization.

Well, it's pretty much a consensus here that the Factory is easier to tune correctly for a given set of mods. Even one less time tearing into the carbs is enough reason for me to go with Factory.

Hawk Rider, not all agree, see link above. I Agree that taking the carbs off multiple times is a pain however I have not had to do that with a Dynojet Kit yet. However all should know I have not insatlled a FactoryPro kit on a Superhawk so I what I am saying has to be taken in that context. JIM

Lance never tried the Factory kit with the K&N. It seems a pretty good combination on my bike.

I'll agree to disagree at this point.

Ok I installed the jet kit today. Pretty easy. Stupid question though. You said 2nd clip from the bottom? I was assuming the top was the pointy end of the needle, and the bottom was the area with the slots? Is this correct? Or will I have to open them back up tomorrow?

Nope, other way around. The pointy end is the bottom. The button is the top.

Okie Dokie. Should only take 20 mins to switch them around. I found its easy to put the spring back on if you hold it in the cover with a flat screw driver and then get it as close as possible, and then let it go. Worked the first time on both sides.
