Hawk stopped running

Hello from a newb. Well today I got the bike out for the first ride of spring. Had it running while I was getting my gear on and filling the tires, so it sat idling for about 10 minutes. Everything sound fine with it during this time. So I give it a quick little rev before pulling out and it just dies. No stutter or anything like I just shut it off. Tried starting it and it doesn't even try to start seems like it isn't getting any spark. Last fall before I parked it I noticed it was starting hard and it even stalled a few times in similar situtations but it would start back up and seem fine the rest of the day. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

Always start with the basics - check for fuel and spark. Do you have bad fuel from storing the bike?

Assuming you had drained your fuel bowls before winter storage and don't have plugged carb jets due to the fuel in the bowls turning to varnish, it sounds like fouled plugs to me. Ten minutes at idle is a long time, then you whack the throttle and throw a bunch of fuel on cold plugs and they quit sparking.

Flooded? Weak battery? Combination of the two?

Charge the battery. Crank with no choke and throttle full open if that happens again. With the bike cold I don't see any option other than to use the choke, just don't use too much.

Sounds like you might be taking the carbs apart to clean them.

Im pretty sure it is getting gas. I opened the air box and gave it a shot of ether, with that it should at least try to start if it is getting spark. I could smell the gas when I opened the air box.
As suddenly as it quit running (like I hit the kill switch) makes me think it is something electrical. I will check for spark at the plugs today. How do I go about checking the kickstand and kill switch for proper operation?

Check the battery for a proper charge and check the terminals. Good Luck

Hey..

Questions:

Did it stutter and die of just shut off instantly?
Did it shut off when you put it into gear..if you did?
When you tried to restart did you choke it?
How old are the plugs?
Have you tried to drain float bowls to see if gas present?
Have you pulled plug..left in wire..held againist head to confirm spark?

My guess? If it stalled out when you put it into gear indicates sidestand switch. If that is not the case..vacum controlled petcock faulty..no gas in float bowls will confirm that...If spark and gas....fouled plugs maybe...

Check battery posts...

Stored in or out?? Moisture issue...??
Gas fresh...stabilizer when stored???

We can rebuild it we have the technology......

No choke

8500 miles

No but there was fuel in the lines when I removed them from the petcock

Both have spark, nice blue kernel

I got a couple nasty backfires today. Could it be a timing issue?
Starting to think Im gonna have to find a way to haul it to the dealer.

No not yet. I wanted to confirm it was getting spark first.
Where is the best place to get plugs? Dealer or auto parts store?

Depends how rich you are (dealer) or how long you want to wait (auto parts).

It's now running. Dumped a little gas down carbs and it started. Now it has a bad stumble off idle. Carbs must be cruddy. Wouldn't of thought it to be the carbs since it started and ran. Then again it just idled.

Thanks for the input guys.

I just started all the bikes today. Man, the SH was a bastard to get running. I left the battery tender (generic one) on there but unplugged it a while back to plug the compressor in. I guess it drained the battery completely somehow so I had to charge her up. I got a couple of really good backfires too. That's never happened before. She ran on one cylinder for a minute before the other one kicked in. I think a thorough cleaning is in order when I rejet for the single exhaust. If only I had a square inch of free space on my workbench. I have Stumpy's fork parts everywhere waiting on a new tube and Nuhawk's are next.
