Fuel light stopped working
what are the odds that it's just a burnt out light?

and if it's the sending unit, how difficult is it to get to?

and of course, i found out it was dead the hard way, by pushing the bike :/

The odds are quite small since it's an LED. They rarely burn out. Try the troubleshooting guide in the service manual. Manual is downloadable via link in KB.
