Try removing just the cover for the intake cam first...

Edit: also, if you go this route, when you're re-installing the cams, make sure that there is no slack in the chain on the side opposite of the CCT. This is important for the timing...

Sorry for all the one liners, but you've removed the cam chain cover correct? In your first picture it's still on. It's one bolt on the side and two bolts on the top...

Yes, sprocket has been aligned and no slack opposition the cct.

One last stupid question and hopefully this thread is done:

Web adjusting the cct for chain play with the top open, I measure the play where the guide goes, correct?

Fml if its not one thing its another.

I noticed one of the valve cover bolts has a small crack in it, so I will have to replace it before finding out if it runs right

Hey man no worries on the help, the guys on here have saved me quite a bit of trouble in the past...

And that blows that the bolt is cracked. Nothing like a little piece of hardware to put a motorcycle in perspective...

Well I really do appreciate it, so far you've helped me the most on this forum.

At least with all of my problems, I've been able to do maintenance the PO didn't do (oil, coolant, brake and clutch fluids, plugs, air cleaner) I don't think any of those were ever changed in the bikes 18k miles.

Well I might have a couple of valve cover bolts laying around if you don't locate a new one somewhere.

I'm checking the the local Honda shop (not a dealer or a Honda company, they just specialize in Honda). If they don't have a new one ill take you up on one

Well it is a rather common part.
The P\N is 90002-MY5-850 the go to this site
Where Used Tool
and you will get a list of all the bikes that use that bolt.
