i just put the top end of my motor together and im getting a ticking noise(like a collapsed lifter).ive check the valve clearence twice-its right on.i removed the pair system and flipped the valves.the noise sounds like its coming from in by the clutch.i took the clutch cover off to put in the spark advancer and reassmebled.its driving me NUTS!i ported the heads,installed a factory jet kit,shaved the heads .020.i drove it around the block,if you just burp the throttle its straight up.just wondering if you guys had any ideas?

Did you put the quieting gear back in when you swapped the advancer? It's also spring loaded and if the spring came undone then that could cause it too. Also, you're saying that it only makes the sound when in gear, not idling? If so, does the noise increase with road speed or engine rpm?

the noise goes up and down with rpm,it doesnt make a difference if its in gear. im going to take the right cover off this morning and see if i screwed something up?what does the quiting gear do, are you talking about the sub-gear?

Yes, the sub-gear.

Sounds like the sub gear like Greg said - had the same thing happen to me when I put in my factorypro detent kit.

when you line up the sub gear its only about one touth of pressure right?

Here it is directly from the manual:

Install the damper springs into the primary drive gear grooves.
Install the friction spring onto the primary drive gear with the concaved side toward the sub-gear.
Apply molybdenum disulfide grease to the primary drive gear and sub gear sliding surfaces.
Install the sub-gear onto the primary drive gear boss so that the sub-gear tabs are positioned against the damper spring and holes are aligned.

Install the primary drive gear assembly and ignition pulse generator rotor by aligning the wide grooves with the wide tooth.

Apply oil to the threads and seating surfaces of the primary drive gear bolt.
Install the special washer and primary drive gear bolt.

I removed my 'sub-gear' several years ago. No weird sounds at all, in fact you can't tell it's gone. I'm 99.9% sure that it can't be the problem. It can't really be installed wrong either.
