Rearsets questions
So I was going to ask Santa (grin) for some adjustable rearsets for Christmas.
I checked on Gilles Tooling adjustable rearsets but they are not imported to the USA anymore (bummer)
The only other choices I have found in the good ole USA are Harris and Moriwaki
(both around $500 bucks - gulp! )
What are your experiances with either the Harris or Moriwaki rearsets?
Who would have replacement parts if I break or bend something on them?
How important are ball bearings vs. bushings?
There are some Cocere (sp?) on ebay for around $350 but they are fixed at 25mm back and 35mm up.
As most of my riding is commuting I was hoping to get a set I could set low for the commute & raise for track days.
Does this sound possible....anybody done it?
TIA
Bill

Sounds do-able. I have the Coerce rearsets and would love some adjustability, but it fit my budget and the shawk hits the track at least 7x's a summer.
You really can't go wrong with either the Harris or the Moriwaki, both beautifully crafted, but I'm unsure about replacement costs for parts. I wouldn't be too concerned about bushings v. bearings as long as bushings are kepted lightly greased. The coerce brand use bushings and with is what I'm guessing a slight change in leverage my shifting dramatically improved, much smoother and more precise. I can't imagine my foot would notice a difference if it had bearings at the pivots. Maybe the bearings would be more durable over time, dunno.
Someone recently posted having Lucas brand rearsets, I believe they can be had through wild hare accessories (google away). Looked nice

Re: Rearsets questions
Gilles rearsets ARE still imported in the US. Give Indysuperbikes.com a call. They can specially import them for you (they did for me). It did take a while, though.
I posted a thread on here somewhere about them. I'm very happy with them, and they look ohhhh...so good!

I have the Harris rear sets and love them. They have a bunch of holes for adjustability but not all are usable as the shift rod hits in some positions. Other than that they give a whole new feel to the bike and shifting is also improved.

Re: Rearsets questions
Could you post some nice big close up pics of your Harris rearsets for my old weak eyes to look at?
Rumor has it the Brits make some really nice stuff (I'm thinking Harris is UK made)

Re: Rearsets questions
Sweet ! Good big pics when opened to full image size...Thanks I can see them well
Looks like the foot pegs are adjustable by mounting bolts & holes.
When you installed them did you have any problems hooking up the shifter linkage, master cylinder, or brake light switch ?
The pegs look a little higher than the stock position.
Any problems when riding around town in stop & go traffic?
My old legs aren't as supple as they used to be...worried about getting stuck on the pegs and falling over at a stop light ....like that guy on the trike in the old "Laugh In" TV show...hehehe
I was thinking of leaving them low for my 'commuting to work' riding and raising them just for track days. Think that's possible without too much trouble?
Sorry for all the questions
TIA,
Bill

No real mounting issues, the hardest part is droping the swing arm. The best way is with the bike straped to an atv type jack.
The pegs are in their highest position right now, still set from a track day. They are fairly easy to change the position as well. I changed them inbetween sessions at the track.

Just remove the pivot pins/springs to revert pegs back to stock position, lower mount can remain in place.

Re: Rearsets questions
I got my Gilles rearsets from the US thru these guys only 4 months ago..
http://www.whaccessories.com/VTR%20Accessories.htm
As an earlier poster said, they took a while (but they did go from Germany to the US to Australia)....but it was definately worth the wait!

Dawg,
Today is 12-13-05 and I have a message on my cell phone from Wild Hair (see monomaster above) that says he can get Gilles rearsets from Germany. He says they are available in black, titanium, or gold. I will speak to him tomorrow hopefully and I will post again to let you know what he says. I had just about given up hope on the Gilles, but I guess I can go ahead and cancel my backordered Harris rearsets from Indy superbikes. Good Hunting.
