Undertail Install

Well, I've got a few questions... after ordering my Ermax undertail and waiting almost 2 months for it to show up, I've got a few questions about the install.

I've got the stock fender removed and cut apart... I'm having some real issues with the mounting though. It came with 4 really small "self tapping" screws. They are basically wood screws that are black (aka totally useless).

So I've gone through, drilled some bigger holes for the mounting points and seem to have finally come up with a way to make the thing work... I should be able to go get all the hardware I need to finish it tomorrow, but it's been a 5 hour long job thus far and a total pain in the ***.

My main question is... is the fitment really this bad or this much work on all the undertails? Are some better than others? I'm honestly ready to take a hammer to this thing and buy another one.

Well, after numerous hours of tinkering, drilling, test fitting, cursing among many other things... I managed to get my undertail installed and front signals installed as well. I didn't think it would take nearly the time it did, but I'm extremely happy with the end result.

Pics to come (if it's ever sunny again in Ohio)

That looks really good. That is going to be my next cosmetic upgrade.

I really like those turn signals.

Do you have a link to where you ordered them?

LOL, thanks for the comments! I'm pretty happy with the outcome, but yea, I really do need a hugger... missed one on ebay a week ago

I actually picked up the lights from www.pjsparts.com (great/best price). I will say it took quite a bit of work to get the fronts to work the way I wanted... I ended up buying 4" long m8x1.25 bolts and drilling holes through the centers. It was about the easiest way I could come up with to keep the front looking as "clean" as it did from the factory.

I can give a bit more detail if anyone wants / needs it...

I found the same problems when installing my Powerbronze unit. What a pain!! Mine was supplied with lots of plastic screws and stuff for mounting the number plate and whatever. Ultimately what I did was to run some stainless bolts and nuts to bolt the lower part of it to the subframe and through the section near the tail light.

Then I found that the duck tail had to flex a lot to go over it and that the standard trip clips didn't want to hold it in place well enough. So I used some of the plastic 6mm nuts and bolts and glued the nut inside the undertail from the inside while on the bench before fitting.

Now I have a strong and secure fastener that is easy to remove and re-install, and is much stronger than the plastic trim clip.
