VFR Gas Tank on SH???

Anyone have experience with swapping a VFR gas tank to the SH? I was thinking of doing it to get a little more mpg out of the hawk. Any thoughts on this map?

The original was SuperBling:
https://www.superhawkforum.com/forum...ead.php?t=6983
Then KaiJu:
https://www.superhawkforum.com/forum...ead.php?t=7221
Followed by mdbuehler:
https://www.superhawkforum.com/forum...ad.php?t=18222

The main problem is the tank interferes with the airbox, and They all took different approaches to solving it. Superbling beat the bottom of the tank in to make it clear the airbox, mdbuehler modded the airbox to fit the tank, and Kai Ju raised the tank up to clear the airbox.

Let me know if you are interested in doing the conversion.

I'm thinking of maybe doing a kit where you supply the stock fuel valve, airbox lid and fuel sending unit and the VFR tank. (98-01 model year because it fits the frame nicely )
I supply the adapter plate and gasket that holds the fuel valve and closes the fuel pump hole on the tank, as well as the rear mount.
I will then modify the parts to make this a bolt on conversion.

The other option is that I sell you my Canadian tank ( teal blue ) I just bought, or the tank that is on my bike right now which does have some small dents in it, but is ready to bolt on.

Here are some pics of my installation.
The rear mount will look more OEM on the kit, the only question that remains will be whether you want the seat raised like I did.
I have no idea yet as to what to charge, so let me think about that aspect and let's see if there is any interest in the kit.

I searched but...didn't get anything? Kept getting errors, went to report to webmaster, more errors...apologies.

Back to the topic, well, I have kind of decided to put this idea on hold for the time being. My Hawk is 98% stock, minus the air filter. I am wanting to work on getting exhaust this winter, I am also in need of new tires. After that, I will check into this again.

kai ju,

Just out of curiosity (as I enlarged upward a VTR tank +1 gallon instead), why didn't you mount the petcock 180 degrees (so the vacuum diaphragm faced the rear) which would provide more clearance from the rear cylinder valve cover? Your current configuration makes it easy to shut off the petcock but a lever or wing nut can be bolted right up to the petcock "switch" and would still be accessible without removing the saddle and lifting the tank. Also, without going to your original thread, didn't you have to "trim" the saddle to get the tank to fit?

If you think that I'm going to admit that I drilled my petcock hole in the wrong place, you're dreaming. Also if you look at the petcock hole pattern, it's not symmetrical, so I can't turn it around. The other problem is clearance inside the actual VFR fuel tank hole, which was my original concern, the next one will have more clearance.
I did trim my seat but recently got another stock seat and it fits just fine.....

Hope that answers your questions.

Maybe you misunderstood me. I know the petcock holes are asymmetrical. Whereas the hole in the plate that bolts up to the tank MAYBE can be relocated slightly (as you indicated you may do), just that the holes for the petcock bolts in the plate could be reversed 180 with the hole for the pick-up screen remaining in the same place. I thought this would move the diaphragm part of the casting rearward away from the sloping valve cover.

Everytime this conversation gets started I make the offer. I will again. I own Superbings VFR gas tank and modded seat for fitting to the Superhawk. Bolt on - done deal. I'm willing to sell it for what I have in it. It's never been out of the box and it's climate controlled.

When I was considering this mod another deal came along for a VFR gas tank - it just included the rest of the bike with it. So now I have the high-mileage two-up capable VFR and the other ***** that wants me one on one and she ain't about lasting forever - it's just the best ride to the finish line you ever had.

Hey Nuthawk, think you can post pictures of this setup? I tried searching for "Superbings VFR tank" (and various combinations) in the search and nothing came up.

I'm just interested in seeing the fit and hearing about the mod -- my next purchase is probably going to be a seat...

Thanks!

It was professionally packed when I bought it and it has never been opened. When I have a verified player I will unpack it and photog the parts. This is back in the day abit but I don't think I ever saw pictures of it mounted. Superbling was a bike not a guy. The guy's name was Doug. Superbling was his custom VTR and if you can bring up any of his pictures on the forum you can see he is a master of the form. Suberbling had been sold shortly before I joined the forum. Doug hung out here and over at the VFR forum as fotomoto. He served for a short time as one of our moderators.

As the country became more polarized during the last election cycle things became heated in here a couple times and he just quit hanging out with us. Our loss really, because he knew a shitload about these bikes and making the most of them.

You might try "larger tank" or "see all posts by Superbling" - the search engine cannot assimilate acronyms like VTR or VFR or CCT. The pictures may not exist any more as some of that material was lost in a server crash long ago.

Ah, found it: https://www.superhawkforum.com/forum...ead.php?t=6983

I have seen a few of Superbling's (Doug's, I mean) posts -- especially on the superbike bar kit -- but didn't put one and one together.

The original Hawk GT list also has a lot of political stuff. It's fun, but it can get old, especially when good members leave because of it... OTOH, talking nothing but gears gets old sometimes.

Thanks!

Randy
