Starting bike in gear

Is something broken on my bike 1998 SH or is it normal that I cannot start my bike when it is in gear by just pulling in the clutch. I have to put it in neutral before I can start it.

Something's wrong with the sidestand switch or your clutch switch. More than likely the connectors came off the swich on your clutch lever.

Thanks I will check both connections and see if one of them fix the probem. It never has worked since I bought it used. It just seemed weird to me that it wouldnt start unless it was in neutral.

back of the clutch lever there are 2 wire spades....sometimes they slide out...the other place is under the seat next to the battery thats where most of the connectors are...

if both are hooked up, u gotta do more testing...

trace the wires from the handle to the connector in the back pull it back, put a voltmeter across the wires and squeeze the clutch, you should see continuity...if u dont, thats your problem, either the mechanism in the clutch is messed or the wire is broken somewhere.

I had that same problem for a while. I had the start switch off and cleaned it really good. For whatever reason, that seemed to correct the problem. Was it actually related to the problem? Hell if I know, but I can start in gear moving down the road now (if the cold natured beast just decides to puke on me). It's something else you could easily do along with the sidestand switch and the clutch switch. Good luck...
