Starting bike in gear
back of the clutch lever there are 2 wire spades....sometimes they slide out...the other place is under the seat next to the battery thats where most of the connectors are...
if both are hooked up, u gotta do more testing...
trace the wires from the handle to the connector in the back pull it back, put a voltmeter across the wires and squeeze the clutch, you should see continuity...if u dont, thats your problem, either the mechanism in the clutch is messed or the wire is broken somewhere.

I had that same problem for a while. I had the start switch off and cleaned it really good. For whatever reason, that seemed to correct the problem. Was it actually related to the problem? Hell if I know, but I can start in gear moving down the road now (if the cold natured beast just decides to puke on me). It's something else you could easily do along with the sidestand switch and the clutch switch. Good luck...
I took the switch off and the clutch handle , cleaned it did a test on the switch put it back together and now it works!!! It has really bugged me to stall at a light and have to put it in neutral before starting, but not anymore. Thanks for the help.
