Possible 2000 VTR1000 purchase
I'm looking at this bikehttps://albany.craigslist.org/mcy/d/...153477127.html.
I owned one about 15 years ago and am thinking about buying this one. I know about the cam chain issues. What other problems should I be on the look out for ?? What's a fair price ?? Thanks for any help. Leon

Looks to have been really well cared for and I think that's a really fair asking price. Plus on top of fairly low mileage and the nice condition you already have nice pipes & new tires. I've bought and sold quite a few Superhawks over the years and I don't think you can really go wrong for $3k. I'm obviously not looking at in person but I'm a sucker for what appears to be an original well cared for older bike like that.
Besides the normal things you'd look for in a used vehicle (any accident damage, etc) the 2 things that I'm sure will come up are installing manual cam chain tensioners and a MOSFET regulator-rectifier.
Superhawks really aren't worth much and while you might find one a little cheaper I'd rather pay $3k for that one than $2500 for one that's not nearly as well cared for that has higher mileage and needs a bunch of stuff...

Some other things to check on/be aware of on this 13,000 mile unit:
Steering head bearings (can loosen up and will eventually wear out on every bike & need replacement
Brake & clutch fluid (recommend change every 2 years)
Coolant (recommend change every 2 years)
Valve clearances (should be checked/adjusted every, I believe, 16,000 miles [I'm from metric Canada; here it's every 25,600 km])
Carburetors synch (same time as valves)
Spark plugs (replace every 16,000 mi/25,600 km)
Air filter (replace OEM paper filter every 12,000 miles/18,000 km)[though it may have a K&N or other aftermarket filter?]

Takes me back to when I bought mine. It was about the same mileage and I paid 35. Looks well cared for and that means a lot when buying an older bike. Have a look at it in person and have a chat with it's owner. You've got nothing to loose in doing so.
