Oil Question..

Might be a stupid question but I'm about to do my first oil change on my new used SH 31,xxx miles.. Not sure what the previous owner was running through it. Just curious as to what some of you have used and if you've had better quality, cleaner/better running etc.. Honda dealership gave me Honda Gn4 10w-40sj.. Thoughts? Opinions? Thanks..

Firstly, welcome to the forum, glad to see another SH fan. Now, there are a few pieces of information you need to know before you get beat-up by the hardened forum members. Use the search function. This topic has been discussed over and over again. You will achieve no universal answer because there are so many options of oil, and to each has their own preference for different reasons. It is highly debatable and never ends with a conclusive decision. You want my opinion. use the honda Gold 10-40 synthetic without moly. Its easy. Honda oil for honda bikes. without moly because it is a wet clutch. and don't go asking about oil filters! Good luck

GN4 will work just fine. Though this is one topic where you will need to do your own research and use whatever makes you happiest.

Yes, searching will give you a thousand answers. A lot depends on how you use your bike. A bunch of guys here who do typical street riding (and are trying to save cash) use Rotella-T ($12 / gal). They have a synthetic version out too, called T6 ($18 / gal). Both are JASO-MA. Many have reported cooler engine temps when using synthetic oils, which is beneficial to these twins.

my 2 cents. I use Rotella T-6 synthetic.

Secondly, I use a Walmart Super Tech filter (ST-6607). It is made by Champion, the same folks that make the Mobil 1 filters. It has advanced media filtration and welded end-caps. It's a far better filter than the Honda filter and costs half as much.

I am relatively new too, so I didn't mind your question, some of these recent answers helped me too, even though I had already found the filter cross ref info (very valuable info!) The Rotella sounds interesting.

Anyway my local auto parts store had Mobil 1 on sale so I got that and the corresponding Mobile 1 filter (from the cross ref chart) for my S Hawks first oil change by me.

As mentioned previously, I take it staying away from any "Energy Conserving" rated oil with molybdenum disulfide or graphite additives is the most critical concern for the clutch effect.

Exactly. Just look for a JASO-MA rating. That specifies that no friction modifiers are used.
