No clutch downshift...

I was travelling to work this morning and when i got to the 405/101 interchange i needed to downshift a few times...so i did. WITHOUT the clutch!! maybe i was tired or not thinking straight as it was ealry but i went from 5th down to 4th (with a light tap of the clutch pedal) then realized what i did and how smooth it happened i tried it again...down to 3rd. wierd.

is this a normal thing or am i in trouble here? If there is something a miss i am still amazed at how smooth it was.

You may have gotten lucky but don't do it again.....good way to mess up your tranny!! Upshifts are ok but not down.

thats odd my bike will not upshift without the clutch ( i have tried accidentally a few times) but the downshift was soo friggin easy. i definately will not make a habit of it either way. dont need any sudden financial woes

I do upshifts on the track all the time because the clutch can make you squirrelly if you're in mid corner. If you do the same thing you normally do,(blip throttle upshift off load), just don't use the clutch it should work but don't force it.

Yeah, I downshift without the clutch all the time. There's two ways of doing it:

A Hold a constant throttle and press down on the shift lever. The engine rpm will change with the gear change and it'll be quite smooth.

B Tougher to do, and not necessarily smooth all the time, but you can just barely blip the throttle and press down on the shifter at the same time. Works most of the time, but can be jerky if you're not good at it. Usually works best with a tiny bit of clutch.

I've been shifting up with no clutch for years on all my bikes. everyone says im gonna tear out my gears but I've never had a single problem. as for down shifting I do it on occation from 6-3 but never lower than that. Just keep it smooth you should be fine.
Worst case scinario you tear up a few gears.... well thats an excuse to have them all undercut both up and down in all the gears when you take them out. then you wont have anymore issues.

Not for nothing but shifting in mid corner might be somthing you should realy think about! Shifting should be done before and after the corner. Not in it. But ride the way you want its you style and bike JMO.

The trans is made to upshift without using the cluch but not down shift. You should blip the throttle before you down shift to help engage the trans better and not upset the bike.

Ask more people "up without OK down not OK"

Good luck

I know but sometimes you get stuck too high in the rpm's so you've either got to slow down or shift up, I choose to shift!! If you practice it really is easy and doesn't upset the chassis but I agree NO to the downshift.

I have to agree about up=ok down=not so good. as far as shifting mid corner I know it's something that I'll do on longer sweepers where your accelerating thru the corner which is what I think 22 is refering to, but yeah on a short tight full lean corner no shifting.

Before I even looked to see where you're from I knew it had to be NYC, Long Island or Jersey. I've never heard anybody say that elsewhere.

Yeah, I guess I should've been more specific.

There's only a few situations where you can properly downshift without using the clutch. I do it all the time. One is to just slow your speed some, like say going from 55mph to 45mph. Coming to a stop, it just doesn't seem to work well. The method I use is as posted above.
