Hawk Down

I purchased this bike a little over a year ago. I've loved it, cherished it and turned it into one smooth running machine.

Following HAWKS guide, I had re-calibrated the carbs from the PO's crappy K&N + Jet Kit setup.

I purchased new fairings and had everything re-painted... /sigh.

@ 45mph on a MAIN street (El Camino) a BMW turned into the lane I was in (The car was turning into the main street from a side street.) I swear I made eye contact with them, I thought they had seen me. However they didn't. (I took both the beginner and advanced MSF training classes.) The front of my bike ended up hitting the left rear corner of their car as I was screeching to a halt panicking /sigh (I locked up my back and front brakes)

I've never flown in my life....but I did that day....I'm not sure how I did this, but somehow I ended up doing a somersault as I hit the pavement and ended up back on my legs LITERALLY running! as I was already in motion......

I broke my left middle finger and will loose two fingernails on my left hand.

Other than that I am 100% .....

The bike will require more to repair than I had originally spent ($2500).

I decided to total the bike and take a cash payout as I do not think riding will be in my *immediate* future. (The family has begged me not to and the dude must abide.)

I've attached a picture of my hand... (It's not gross).

I have to say....Never before has a Police officer been so understanding and considerate. He looked at me, looked at the bike...looked back at me and he could see I was emotionally broken...He drove me to the Hospital at no charge and called my folks to let them know where I was and that I was okay.

The driver.....I really can't fault him for not seeing me....He is a very nice guy and the first thing he did was pull over and run to me.

I had full gear, the appropriate training and lasted for over a year on the SH....r.i.p

You have been a wonderful community!

-See you soon.

We make a huge decision every time we swing a leg over our bikes. Each of us decides when it's not worth it anymore.

Glad you're OK but I think in a few days or weeks when the shock wears off you'll be really mad at that driver. I know I would be.

My co-workers have asked why I am so complacent with it all....like you said... I am grateful I am here today...with the most *minor* of issues...I am alive, I can go to work, I have a *likely* bent finger for fun stories....... These are what is most important to me at this point in time.

That will always be the most important thing, no doubt about it. Take some time off, see how bad the urge gets to throw a leg over and ride. If it just ain't for you, so be it. If you're passionate about 2 wheels, you'll get back on. I was involved in a pretty nasty wreck in '92. I took a 5 year break mainly due to financial reasons, but I still followed the industry. I was totally crazy for the Superhawk when it came out, but could only afford a Hawk GT.
It's great to hear you didn't incur any serious injury. Bottom line is, this guy was at fault and could have taken your life. His negligence cost you 1 Hawk. That's gotta bother you @ least a little?? The older I get the more intolerant I grow for peoples stupidity while operating a motor vehicle. I think he was lucky that you reacted the way you did.

Ouch! Sounds like my first ever accident when I was 19 on a 125. I had to stop my witnesses from beating up the car driver for causing the accident. Well done on the cops looking after you.

Did the medics use a red hot paperclip on the nails?

Hope you heal quick it doesn't put you off biking forever.

Glad you are OK. For sure the wolf is always at the door. Any crash you can walk away from.... (or in this case high speed run).

Hey man, great case for the guys that dont wear their gear all the time (Im guilty) you dont have to be going 80+ to get dead. glad you had your gear on... now to the business. Are you getting the bike back??? Not to ride but to part. If you're the slightest but handy you can recoup a decent chunk of change motor wheels exhaust radiators calipers the list goes on and you wouldnt imagine how much money is still left there.

For example I would be interested in the headers... Im sure someone hear may want the motor (If we were closer I wouldn't mind a spare to build while I ran my stocker) you could probably sell 80% of it here. Food for thought, smart guy with your gear and all made me think thanks for sharing.

You are one lucky guy, landing on the feet takes some skills
I'm glad you are more or less OK.
Reminds me my first accident over 20 years ago somewhat like Wicky's, got hit from a van full of passengers running a red light in a very busy intersection on my left side, picked up my left leg just before he hit me as I spotted him in my peripheral vision, than flew over couple cars and landed doing a somersault through my right shoulder like I learned to do with a millitary parachute not to break you feet on landing, stood right up and run to beat up the Ahole with his van with one wheel in the air as my bike set right under it, by the time I was about to pull him out of the van, couple other riders pulled me back and held me from beating him

I am certain I will return to the motorcycles.....after all, here I am responding and still reading the forums.

My doctor said it will be ~ 6 months before I will know whether or not I will have crooked fingers.... It's been ~ 2.5 months.

The bike is gone and I released all liability from it. The Tow Truck driver promised me he would convert it into a track bike.

After all the work I had put into the Hawk...seeing the Tank dented to hell...the fairings all fuzzled up....oil leaking from the bottom case.....the fork was trashed, the rear wheel was bent...blah blah blah blah...

I sit here on a Friday evening at work...ready to get into my beautiful lowered 2000 Mustang GT with Ford Racing FR500 rims...

All I can think about it how much I miss my bike and how cheated I was at losing it so early.. I purchased the bike with 25.4k miles and never had a chance to get it to 26k....

I loved working on this bike. You can't work on cars in the same manner you could as with the Hawk.

It will likely be a few years, but I swear...marriage...kids...w/e I WILL have another bike...even if just to look at it in the garage.

If I could offer any opinion on the Hawk...it is an epic beast and an absolute thrill to ride.

You are all such a wonderful community...If Honda has a new VTwin sports bike...I'll likely splurge on it..otherwise I'll grab another Hawk.
