CCT Situation.....
CCT Situation.....
So here's my first question on the forum.....
As I stated last week I am new and have only owned the Superhawk for a week or so now. Please be gentle.......
I am new to this bike and the feelings and noises it gives and makes. I have read so much about cct problems and failures. I'm becoming a bit weary and nervous. Can this part fail while riding? What happens if it does? Do I slingshot of the bike like rocket man going head first into oncoming traffic?
My bike has 21.000 miles, always maintained and still has original cct. My bike does have a rough idle ( or sounds rough to me compared to my previous 600's ) but this is only when cold and goes away. What noises should I look out for? Should I just have the cct replaced either way? I feel like I should just do this with every oil change by the way things are sounding. Is this costly to have done? Can I do it myself? What other viruses is the Superhawk prone to?
Any advice is good advice since I'm lost at the moment.
Thanks!
-Matt

First: yes just do it either way. (and once is enough for the life of the bike)
Second: once done the only other gremlin this bike has is the R/R.
Third: Yes you can do it yourself if you have the tool kit, and a few other basic tools, and are willing to get dirty and take your time.
Here is a link to the in progress write up that Yruyur and I started after doing our bikes: http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/219618/cctwt.docx edit. a pdf version so it can be opened by those who don't have 2007 or the 2007 compatibility pack installed: http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/219618/cctwt.pdf
Please note that writeup is not quite complete as it needs a few more pictures and clarifying in the text etc..

I just looked through that writeup and realized the important step of cinching down the locking - retaining nut on the APE was left out..
Like I said earlier, we never really finished the write up.

as stated above ,yes ,change the CCT's ,27k. miles on mine when the front CCT failed just sitting at idle ,the result was bent valves ,so you should definately look into getting the manual CCT's ,and the work involved isn't all that hard if you're mechanically inclined at all .My next task is the R/R ,before that gives me any trouble .
good luck and enjoy the ride ,i know i do ,,,,,,,, ;^)

Here is another CCT how to: https://www.superhawkforum.com/forum...ad.php?t=11275
also most likely the noises you hear are probably not cct's failing. Most of the time there is not a prolonged warning, you hear noise, it goes bang. So just relax have fun and get those cct's replaced as soon as you can. I don't think you need to park it until you change them, but cct's should be a priority for you to do.

A twin makes different normal noises than a 600 I-4 would make. You'll get used to them an just accept them as normal. But I do recommend that you do change the tensioners out as soon as you can to prevent it from damaging more than just the cost of replacing them. Trust us, you'll sleep better at nite and know that you did something to better the reliability of your bike and join all of us that did the mod at one time or another. We all suffered from "tensionerfailaphobia" before. Some of us actually freaked out and were stranded on the side of the road until help could arrive. Don't let this happen to you! For god sakes man! Place an order now for your CCTs. Just call 1-800-getta-CCT. Operators are standing by.
mattvdsande when in doubt replace, ask Tromo01. Secondly, rough idle could be due to the fact the bike is not tuned up. Basically a carb sync and idle adjustment.
Also, make sure the brake and clutch fluids have been flushed. But more importantly, if there is any doubt in your mind about the CCT's I would replace them. It is very cheap insurance.
Good luck.
