might need a new motor
i was on the way home from work a week ago and i was being gentle getting up to 60. well all of a sudden i heard a loud knocking noise so i stopped i let it run for about 30 seconds to see if i could figure out where its comeing from. im far from a mechanic on bikes. the loud noise was coming from the rear cylinder or the back part of the V-twin.. would it be cheaper to fix it or drop a engine in it?

Cam chain tensioner.
They have been known to stop tensioning and allow the cam chain to jump. If it still runs then maybe not catastrophic.
Buying and installing a new motor is no joyride either. (I just did a motor swap). Then again, its hard to do extensive motor work with it in the frame.
If you are not mechanical then neither is really a great option for you to attack.
