make sure you are checking the oil with the bike standing straight up,when its on the kick stand, you wont see oil in the glass.
you get accurate reading with it upright.

If either crankcase breather comes loose then vaporized oil will vent out to atmosphere with the blowby (which is normal) that occurs. You may notice it (oil sheen on the motor or whatnot) or you may not, depending on which one comes off. Check those tubes.

Be sure to actually drain whatever the oil is in the engine to verify it is in fact down as much as you believe before adding oil! My red 98 VTR (truly the fastest year and color) occasionally will try to freak me out by withholding oil up in the head, oil galleries, oil filter, clutch, etc rather than let the synthetic ooze (lately Shell Rotella T-6 5W-40) I use make its way back to the sump/oil sight glass. Its tricked me a few times before I got smart and drained the oil to verify what was in there. Maybe its the better than OEM back-flow valve in the Purolator One oil filters I have used for many years ((it has over 75k miles now) but it has also occurred with the W-M oil filters and Rotella dyno I use before I put it to bed for the winter and run it in with in the spring before switching back to a Purolator (though I may run the W-M filter for a few thousand just for yucks) and T6.
