What's the issue with the cct - SH newbie

Hi All,
Since I'm still a new SH owner, I'm trying to catch up on any issues to watch out for. I keep seeing comments about the cct, but can't find the basic info about it on the tech board. Can anyone enlighten me? I just bought my 00 SH about 6 weeks ago, with only 5k on it. Its absolutely immaculate, never been abused, still looks and runs like its right off the showroom. Should I be worrying about the cct?

Thanks.

Most often it s a failure of the spring inside the CCT. Once that happens you lose tension on the chain, cams go out of time and valves hit pistons.

Reports of early failure are low, failure in the 20-30K mile range much more common.

You can pop in a new set of OEM ACCT's or a set of manual ones from APE. Manual is kind of a misnomer. They do not really have to be adjusted manually often, more like a set manually when installed and forget.

Thanks. I'll get with my local engine gurus and see about doing a cct swap sometime in the not to distant future (next 5-10k), just to be on the safe side! Appreciate the info, this board is great!

about the cct's?

I am also a very new SH owner. I just bought my 04 Hawk. I have no idea what the cct is. Can anyone explain that to me? And do i need to have it fixed right away on my bike (its black with 1,200 miles on it)

Cam Chain Tensioner it's that simple... Again as TXSuperChicken said... at 1200 mi it's hardly an issue...

If you are going to replace the most logical time is to do so at the next valve clearance check. The valve covers will be off for that and so then its a simple job to install or verify that you have the updated ones from honda (dealer should be able to tell you when they switched to a slightly different design, but I recall it being around model year 2000). Its personal choice to leave stock or replace but depends upon your basic philosophy on honda reliability, anticipated miles you'll be putting on and ability to at least occasionally check tension manually - if you aren't willing/able to do that then you'd be better off with stock.

It is something to be aware of but not alarmed by. Most threads are about preventive fixes. I can only recall a hand full reported failures. It's no where near as common as r/r failures. Just read up on both.

Great info. I'm new to so I'm gonna hijack this and ask is this most common on the pre 2000 Hawks or all (cliby said it was addressed in 2000). Reason I ask is because I may (almost positive) be picking up an 02 today and plan to run it for the long haul. Just something I want to plan for in the future.

I recall something about a marking on the CCTs that indicated a newer/revised one...like that was a white dot on the old one and the newer one would have an orange dot on it...that was the only difference...I think I read it on an old RLZ thread long ago...can someone verify this?

I don't think there was ever a definitive answer on this. I've heard of pink, orange, white, and (I think) blue dots over the years.

I had 2 OE tensioners go out on my '00 before 10k miles, both times on the rear, but I think I'm the extreme not the norm. I wouldn't worry about it too much though as they will give you a heads-up they're on their way out - lots of rattling. Just be in tune with your bike and you should be able to catch it before you jump a tooth and bend the valves.

When you say "lots of rattling", is this an all-the-time occurence, only when you're on the throttle, off the throttle, etc etc?

You'll hear it at idle, not usually under a load unless it's really bad and by that time it's usually too late anyway. I remember the first time it happened back in '01. I started it up and immediately noticed the rattle but decided to try to limp it home anyway - I made it 3/4 mile. You'll hear it when/if it happens in time to address it in most cases.

FWIW - Like I said I seem to be the extreme, but after two failed Honda CCTs I just went with the APEs and now I never have to worry, and I've never had to adjust them in 6 years.
