Well I suffered a CCT sudden failure

My Honda dealer has a British tech who used to own a VTR, so I thought he would know about the APEs.

This isn't really an engineering error. Its hard to predict product reliabillity 20k down the road.
I lost a 98 toyota tacoma to a failed frame when it rusted from the inside out. THAT is engineering/manufacturing negligence. (I sold mine for pennies before this whole recall thing)
btw, CE's are the ones with all the common sense. ME's lose it somewhere between junior and senior year.

What are you doing with just one bike anyway? Just buy something else to have fun with while the 'hawk is down. Once the 'hawk is back up and running well you have two bikes to choose from and a spare if one goes down again. Heck, I've got FOUR and I might be adding another this weekend. That'll be five if I can't sell my VTR or XR.

I have 20k on mine. Going to change them next season. Others have gone well past 30k, but I'm not going to take the chance.

Yeah, it's already in pieces. Saturday I'll pull the head off and go from there. I'm going with APE ccts I think, and depending upon how bad the valves etc. are letting a shop rebuild it. I'll order parts after saturday. 2 APE ccts with gaskets, head gasket, new plugs while I'm at it, and either new valves or if it seems too difficult just let the shop do that for me.

Not that i want to point fingers or poke you in the eye with a sharp stick, but "engineering is the most important". What a load of crap! Hmmmm, lets think this one out, if you didn't have a teacher, you wouldn't learn to engineer, or write, or do math, or fill in the blank. If you want to talk about important and underpaid, and made fun of, i think we have you there.

Ahh...I see the topic has resurfaced.
Update:
I'm finally, yes finally, almost done with my rebuild. It was an exceeding long winter here and I've only had a few days here and there that I've been able to work on it. I just need to get the carbs back on and up from there.
All said and done about $1000...
Professionally rebuilt heads
Full top gasket set
Had the mechanic bench test all the valve clearances
APE CCTs
Plugs, Oil, Filter, Coolant etc.
countless hours of my time and the stress of not knowing for sure it will start when I'm done

As I posted in the other thread, the parts needed on mine (rough $ conversions) were :
2 Inlet valves - $50
2 Valve guide oil seals - $15
1 Head gasket - $25
2 Cam cap screws - $3
1 camchain - $71 (I used a cheaper XL1000V chain)
1 tensioner - $60
1 tensioner gasket - $3
1 water outlet elbow + O ring. - $30
1 new exhaust stud + manifold nut - £free and $1.50
1 Exhaust gasket - $6
1 new centre cap in stator cover - $20
stator cover gasket - $10
New Motul Semi-Synth Oil - $36
Filter - $10
All told $340-ish ?
Most I had to get at Honda parts, apart from maybe the oil and filter.
The centre cap had siezed solid on the stator/alternator cover, so this had to be chiselled off. I also cracked the water elbow when tightening it onto a new O ring.
As an additional warning - be very careful when torquing up the cam retainer caps, I stretched 2 bolts, so make sure that even if the torque wrench hasn't clicked, stop by the same angular degree on the rest of the cap bolts.
the stress of not knowing for sure it will start when I'm done
Oh, and lastly, does everyone change the camchain after a CCT failure ?
Cheers,
Paul.

CCT-Heads Builds
Just searching for compatability of camshafts/heads combo and came upon
this thread. Almost 2 years ago. Bet it seems just like yesturday, learned much from the project as I can see.
Kendrick, guess you decided to keep a Hawk. Entertaining and informative read(maybe not at the time though)
Glad it all came out well. Seems most of the posters are now using MCCTs.
Will be installing my MCCTs soon along with the pair block-off plates.
