Sudden Change.

So I was out for a ride last night and I wound it up pretty good on the highway. After getting off the highway I noticed the bike was louder than usual. It was also popping more than usual. Instead of the the usual occasional random pop it was a more consistent pop, pop, pop. The engine sounds louder under the tank which is making me believe that something has come loose around the carbs. It kinda has that removed airbox sound to it. Do parts usually come loose under there?

All my searching has yielded only PAIR valve issues. Could this be the issue all of a sudden?

cheak your exaust gaskets. I had the same thing happen about 4 months ago. it's a really cheap fix but it will make you parinoid and tear apart half the bike. mine were at the header to midpipe connection.

That will cause increased popping all of a sudden too?

There are several hoses connected to the airbox for emissions purposes. Maybe one of those came off.

You might be able to feel an air leak on a blown exhaust gasket or hear it get louder as you get closer to it (careful).

yup. if you're venting enough exhaust, it will make that cylinder run lean. because of the loss of exhaust pressure. a leak is basically doing what the pair valve used to do. mix exhaust with the air. that used to be how I knew I hadn't gotten a good seal with my highmounts was they were still popping like crazy. I mean they still popped after I got them tight because I hadn't taken care of the pair valve yet, but it was way worse when there was a good leak. once they were tight, I would get maybe 1-2 actual pops as I approached stoplights. no more.

yeah that was it. I blew out the gasket between the rear header pipe and the mid pipe. That explained why my left leg was expecially hot . Nice quick fix. Thanks for the help.

did you put a different grade of gas in it. I know if I put premium in the superhawk pops alot but with 87 the popping is minimal
