So I plan to buy this tool to ease my valve adjustment but what size should I get?

Ahh, you do know the VTR is shim adjustment Yes? 9.48mm shims to be specific.

if you know that and your asking for use on some other bike, then yes, the Motion Pro tappet adjuster works well, I have several in different sizes.

Revised question, best place for shim kits? Or do I buy a bunch individually?

Smokin,

I just went through a valve adjustment.

Bought a hot cams kit.

Good luck.

Same kit I bought. Still had to order individual shims because the kit is not graduated in small enough increments. Other than that it worked great.

Not the same kit. It was a Wiseco. Same deal though.

Best value, Hot cams or K&L or other brand used shim kit.... I buy them for 50% or less than new ...all sizes.
If buying new, order a Hot Cams 9.48 mm shim kit from Amazon and be done with it.

None of the after market kits come in "Half sizes" only OEM shims come that way
But I have never NEEDED an OEM 1/2 size shim to get valves into spec.. Wanted yes....needed no.

The Hot Cams kit has the full range of sizes, and (IIRC) 5 of each. The refill kits just come with a single specific size so you can "refill" the kit.

I just search Ebay and craigs list as well as motorcycle forum classifieds

Little different for me as I don't have a bike waiting on them so I just search once a week or so and if one pops up I buy it.

Folks buy the kits, use one once, sell the bike and then later find the kit in the garage and sell it.

Hot cams refill kit is a 5pk of one shim size to "refill" main kit when you use up a single size.

The full kit comes with 3 of each size which works out 99% of the time..but occasionally, you will need 4 same size shims I think I can remember that happen only once in the last 20 years or so.

Another option is to see of a local shop or dealer will "swap" shims with you.. You bring in a 2.05 and they swap you a 2.00 or something.
That is a hit or miss deal...... I might do it, if it did not zero balance me on the size you needed, but Im not going to give up my last 2 size XX.
I have also swapped at a small price...like the refill price.... per shim.

So you need a 1.89, 2.00, 2.10 2.05 shims...and am down to 1 of each... Id give them to you but ask for $22, the cost of ordering a refill package of each of those shim sizes.
