In my ongoing effort to have a cooler running bike, I did a couple things.

First, I used some foaming air conditioner core cleaner on the radiators. It gets in and foams all the gunk out leaving them way more efficient.

Next, I replaced my missing thermostat. I had removed it years ago to try to get more coolant flow. Turns out, having a thermostat in cools the engine better than no thermostat at all.

Guessing its due to proper amount of time in the rads to do the heat transfer thing.

Anyway, thought I'd pass on my findings.

Oh and I run the Chinese "racing" radiators which are a half inch thicker than stock and cool way better.

 

You use engineice?

 

Havent tried that stuff. I used Evans waterless coolant, prevent engine overheating for a while. Its waterless and creates zero steam or pressure. It pretty pricey though.

Have you had good results with the engine ice? Can you run that in the winter?

 

Might sound stupid, but if you're from NYC as your profile suggests does your bike really overheat that often that it is an issue?

 

Install an electric water pump, remove thermostat for this.

I have had one for about 3 years now and bike runs uber cool.

My bike used to overheat due to the extremes that we ride under down here.

Since installing the pump it has never gone above 84 Celcius.

Another advantage is removal of water pump drive gear and chain for more power due to not having to drive them.

Well at least that's what I tell myself.

 

Kenmore, I do think I want to do that, but have a fork swap that I want to do first.

And End, yes NYC is the very #1 spot to overheat. Honda has gone through many trials trying to get their side rad bikes to cool at what they call "parade speed".

The VFR and Goldwing are poorly designed in that their cooling fans blow IN instead of OUT like ours does. The fix for those bikes is to switch to a VTR fan.

 

I haven't tried it yet but plan to this season. It's used a bunch @ my place of employment. It's safe to -26f and touts 10-20 degrees decrease in running temp. My boss uses it and recommends it.

 

Right, see that's a vote. I have only heard the guys who already bought it but have no baseline say its great. I tend to want to hear a baseline then improvement report.

I am willing to try new stuff.

The evans cooling stuff says the coolant temp will be the same so no way to check the results.

 

So I did flush my system early this spring and went with Engine Ice. Since we don't have digital temp gauge, I can't report a specific number. Does it perform as advertised? I have no reason to believe it doesn't. Maybe I could have marked my temp gauge with a small piece of tape to exactly mark the spot it ran @ before.
