Smoking at start-up

For some reason my hawk smokes a little {not a lot} when i first start is after a sitting for a while. It stops after about a minute and it a puff or two. Is this normal and what could be causing this?

Stone, helpful info could include but not be limited to:
age/mileage, quality/timing of maintenence/abuse, location/color of smoke, ambient temp., how long it's been smoking, strange noises...I'm sure there's more and that others will pitch in with more suggestions/questions and that we can get to the bottom of this shortly.

is the smoke is white and has a blueish hue to it then you have some tired valve seals/guides. Might also be your piston rings. How many miles do you have on it?

OK here goes. The smoke is white in color. Its a 98 with 8400 miles. I bought it about a month ago from a dealer. Started and rode it first before I bought it. I got it home and the next day it was about 20 degrees out but I wanted to fire it up and ride around the neighborhood. First I had trouble starting it then once I managed to get it started it ran like crap. Then the next time I tried to start it I couldnt get it started at all. With the advice from this forum I checked the plugs and found them fouled. I suspect the time I did get it started it was running on one cylinder after reading through some of the other posts here. I changed the plugs and It has been starting right up ever since. I also add seafoam to the tank because I believe the bike might have been sitting a while before i bought it. The Dealer says they cleaned the carbs but I dont know that to be true. I just noticed the last couple of times that I start her up i see a little white smoke puff out from the exhaust. Its not a lot and goes away completly after she warms up. Hadnt really noticed it before and was wondering what if anything might be wrong. Oh and yesterday it was 53 out.

could be the seafoam ?
maybe the cold weather? mine will blow a little steam if it's mid 50s or colder and that's normal exhaust condensation.

I think you're right, Bird! Probably will go away as he gets into warmer weather and let the seafoam do it's thing. Mine always puffed white while it was warming up below 50F but I always thought it was just steam. 8400 miles in 9 years is not even really riding more than one day (one tank) per month. I'd be real tempted to take the tank off and flush it before the season gets going but if there are problems with the intake later on I think it will have to be tore down.

Ride the **** out of it and report back in 2 tankfulls. I betcha it'll go away if it really is smoke. Otherwise it's probably steam, which is normal and is a byproduct of internal combustion.
