hi can anyone tell me how to shim stock carbs?

It's not too hard. Get some .040" thick washers for a #10 fastener at your local hardware store. They should fit under the head of the stock needle. This will move them out away from the jet which will richen up the mixture over the rev range it controls. That range is the midrange and off-on throttle portions only.

I used #6 brass washers on mine which were .026 thick - 1 per carb.

thanks for the quick reply ! which is best a 0,26 or 0.40, i will be doing a bafflectomy aswell so the best for that? thanks john

If you still have stock pipes, even if they are modified, I'd go with a very thin shim or nothing at all. I thought you were jetting for aftermarket pipes.

Brass is nice, but stainless steel works too. Don't use plain ol' steel though.

thanks for the help ,ill do this on the weekend.do you know of anyone putting a small fan on the r/r to stop it over heating?(how did it work and is it worth doing ?).

IIRC shimming from .26 to .60 is about the range needed depending on your particular bike.

Mine carbs are still stock with aftermarket exhaust and is just a bit lean in the midrange (slight rpm hunting at ~4000 rpm and constant throttle, but not much)

cool, maybe ill leave carbs alone and see if the bafflectomy changes anything

nothing i heard that a bafflectomy will upset carbs so just doing research first.

Some or all of the following: Not running well at all throttle positions, rpm not steady when cruising, low power, hesitation, etc etc.

For a bafflectomy it's usually enough to just turn the mixture screws a 1/2 or 1/4 turn... or even less...

oh, thanks for the responses guys. my bike constantly pops on decel, like a LOT of back pressure it seems, many pops but runs like a champ.

I don't think it's worth the trouble because there are mixed responses about the effectiveness. If you have fins on yours don't worry about it. If you don't you might want to get one soon. if your battery is old, it may exacerbate RR failure??
relative to the carbs, I drilled the largest holes i could around the outer ring of the pipe rear leaving only small amt of metal holding it between holes. Sounds good but not obnoxious.
put .40" shims on needles(remove the little OEM washer).
turned the carbs over far enough to back out the air mix screws with a modified tweezers just far enough to slot them with a dremel and set them at 2 1/4 turns out with a screw driver.
cut paper filter out with a cutting wheel and put foam filter treated with filter oil and sealed with filter grease(KN)
no jet kit.
plug wire resistors removed. PAIR removed

runs good, no popping on decel as before/

haven't sync'd the carbs yet but will eventually/

You can look at color of plugs and pipe ends and tell quickly if you're too rich.

ill try with 0.026 first to see if any different,do i remove the oem washer or leave it in???????

since I posted last, I cut the center out of the exhausts and removed one pipe on each side. No difference in performance, but sounds healthy. The needle shimmed .40 plus other mods listed at bottom of each of my posts. Get it on!
make sure you set the TPS between 450-500ohm while you're in there.
