Mine does that, too. I bought it last year with 1000 miles on it and shifting from 1st into 2nd has always been rough and clunky. From my own experience, in between 2000 - 4000 is the sweet spot, too low or too high will not do any good.
I also had my bike checked by a Honda dealership last year as soon I noticed the difficulty of shifting 1st into 2nd and the answer was no issues at all. I wouldn't worry about it too much since this is a common issue on the superhawk and we're not the only ones who experience it.

I am still waiting to hear whether or not the FP shift kit solves the 1-2nd gear clunkyness....
I don't have much issue with the way my Hawk shifts, other than the 1st to 2nd shift. If the shift kit solves this, I am all over it! If not, then I may hold off.

yeah mine is clunky going into first alright. don't bother me much though.
I'm also wondering, like fundgh is, what people's experience has been with the FP evo start shifter. i haven't come up with any info in my searches. might be a project for next winter.

THUMPER: I don't quite understand this "You should also change the shift pedal throw distance from the stock 7/8" to 5/8" or 3/4" by moving it one spline on the shift shaft and then re-adjusting the the pedal back to the stock ride height position." Do you rotate 1-spline CW or CCW (looking at the end of the shaft), then which way do you go turning the rod CW or CCW (with CW being facing the front of the bike down the shaft)?

That is where the quote came from. My question consequently still stands. The thread is not specific in terms of directions, and based on my understanding of mc transmissions, the "throw" distance is determined internally for each ratio and cannot be changed via the linkage. The effective throw can be changed by lengthening or shortening the length of the lever (which I've tried). The linkage should only be able to effect the relative position (height/arch/path) of the lever.
