Ok so I see a lot of posts about replacing with an upgrade R1 regulator or R6 regulator but what about just replacing the regulator with a factory unit? Wouldnt this sound like a better option rather than having to rewire for quite possibly a junk pos used one?

Presumably the R/R you had was OEM and unfinned - post 2000 the part was replaced by an upgraded finned one as you've linked to.

Yamaha ones are a cheaper if fiddlier option.

My 97 storm had its R/R replaced in 2002 with the later R/R and has been fine since.

mine took a dump about 6 days ago,i found a 2000 yamaha yzf recetifier,the only 2 pins i had to change was positive and negitive,the 3 yellow i left alone and pushed onto connectors,bought a plug in to fit the recetifier,slid wires thru and done,took 20 mins,i got mine for 50 from a used motorcycle shop,the differnce in the new stock and yamaha recetifier is that the yamaha is bigger and has more fins to desipate heat,the new stock from honda is smaller still but does have fins,my opinion is bigger with more fins equals little more cooling.another solution is to go with after market recetifier,they go for about 100,give or take some dollars depending on site.

Bought a Rick's from bikebandit.com. Which looks exactly like the one in the link you posted. No complaints so far. bout $95 shipped.

R/R Voltage output is a very steady 14.1-14.2 through the rev. range.

Much better than the OEM unit when it was working, which would fluctuate from 14.xx and spike to 15 on hard and abrupt revs.

Decided to go with a 06-07 R6 Regulator. Found one new on ebay for $32.76. Hell of a deal if I say so myself. Letcha guys know if it works.

 

Ok so i got the regulator. Problem is this baby has 6 plugs and mine only has 5.. So what about the sixth plug? I purchased one that looks exactly like this guys: http://vtr1000f.wickidnet.com/ and he said it doesnt matter what year... so.. Should i be good with wiring this guy up without using the sixth plug?

 

For what it's worth i just had mine replaced at a honda dealership under warranty and they fitted a third party copy one, not only that but it is apparently off a cbr1100xx blackbird they "modified" to fit .

Still lt's a nice big finned thing and the bike shouldn't be charging at 18v anymore! If it pops again (and i had to pay!) I'd go r6/r1 for definite.
