removing crank case covers
removing crank case covers
I dropped a bolt down my rear head on the very right side between the chain sprockets and head. I've tried fishing it out with a magnet with no luck, so my next step is to start removing parts.
What are the possibilities of it dropping into the oil pan? The way I see it, that would be the easiest part to pull, but I haven't been able to find an oil pan gasket anywhere online.
My other question is would it be wiser to take off the left or right crank case cover? I've looked over the manual and can't determine if any internals are held in place or attached to the covers that might get screwed up upon removal.

Because the sump doesn't have a gasket - use silicone gasket

Glad you got it out..thats not a good feeling
a few months back adjusting my valves I dropped a cam gear bolt down the rear head. My right engine cover was off for repair and paint. Fished around with a magnet everywhere in the oil pan but couldn't find it. I ended up turning the whole motor/swinger almost upside down to dump the bolt out. I think it was in the transmission

Ya I got VERY lucky.
I took it for a 150 mile ride yesterday and it ran great with the ccts I made. Im at 182 miles on one tank and my gas light just came on. It was all 55-65 mph highway, twisty and some elevation changes but I'm surprised it lasted that long. It felt good to have the bike make me smile after not riding for almost a month.
