R/R swap question??

R/R swap question??
I was reading over the R/R swap thread in the Knowledge forum and had a question. I have searched and was unable to find any hits that would point me in the right direction.
I know many people are going to the R1/R6 units. However, are there other bikes that have R/R's that would work also? In my area there is a GSXR 600 being parted out as well as a 2008 R1. I have spoken to the guy with the '08 R1 and he is getting me a price for his unit.
Are there years that work best? Bikes that work best? Years to avoid?
My R/R went out today on a ride and I am now facing doing this right away. Almost got stranded today in Red Top Mountain State Park. I do not think I have killed the battery but the bike was just dead after we made a short rest stop. I tried to start it and got nothing. We had a park ranger give us some jumper cables and the battery still had charge enough to make the cables spark when they touched. It started right up after the jump and I was able to ride back home (maybe 20-30 miles).
Thanks

So it seems most Honda units are out.

These guys are local. Has anyone used a GSXR 1000 R/R? It looks from the pic that it has 5 wires like the R1/R6's.

I count 8 wires, which is not to say it won't work, you'll just need to do some research on which wires to use and where they go.
I put a Hayabusa regulator on which is the same as some earlier model GSXRs. Here is one.http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/06-Su...=p4506.c0.m245

Finally after digging through some old posts and cross referencing with Google I was able to find this one:

Looks like it has been done on here before. I am going to pick it up tomorrow and give it a try.
Thanks everyone.

It had 5 wires. I had to modify the plug on the harness to fit the Hayabusa plug a little but I could have just used individual connectors. The power leads needed to be reversed also. As far as what to do with the additional wires on the regulator, dunno what they are for offhand.

After a long discussion with Circuit Burner, I will never buy a used R/R again. Yes, his product is more expensive than what you're looking at, but it comes with a lifetime warranty and built in redundancy.
Check out his site: www.motovoltage.com
BTW, I just burned up the R6 R/R that I installed.

SUCCESSFUL!
Swapped out with a 2006 R6 R/R. I used the wiring diagram from this thread:
http://vtr1000f.wickidnet.com/
The 2006 R6 R/R had 6 pins. I hooked up the top row all yellow like the thread and left the pin between the Green and Red bottom pins empty.
After starting up at idle I was running 12.56 and then at 3K RPM I was running around 14.0. This is after the bike had died yesterday while riding so I think it was successful.
