possible tank leak...is filling with H2O a bad idea?

i have what i think is a small gas leak coming form my tank. thought it was the sending unit or gasket under but i do not think that is the culprit. thought about filling tank with water off the bike to see if i could get to the bottom of it. any ideas/suggestions? it's definately coming from under the tank and running down the tank to the frame (tank was spray painted so i'm thinking it was picking up paint as it went). see pics.

thanks

andy

If it was spray painted, then the source of the leak should be obvious as fuel eats most sprays. Looks like the tank has been at least 3 colors (black, yellow, red) so I'd assume it's been dented before; maybe hard enough to finally leak.

Not sure how water would help.

SlowHAWK is an unknown quantity at this point
You could try a bit of compressed air... probably wouldn't need more than 10-15 psi to start hearing some air coming through if your able to block off the openings.

she's been black, red, yellow then black again... and it has been dented (stripping it for a repaint) i thought i'd use the h2O to attempt to find the leak. i can't seem to find the source. i'll try the air and see where that gets me.
