Is my starter on death row ?

I have been told, in general, Honda starters do not sit well. My '98 Hawk sat for 6 /8 years before I rescued her, so I at least qualify there.
The bike is currently in a very good state of tune, so it it only turns over 1 or 2 times to fire up, but there is this moaning sound, uh yeah, like that, louder when warmed up . I am pretty certain it is the starter motor. What would be my best move to pin point the sound ? bench test ? Should I rebuild or replace ? 14 k miles on bike. I checked Cycle parts nation, seems a new starter would be near 350 USD. thanks for the input. What is the best gear to use for a jump start, should I need that ?

It's actually pretty easy to take apart, inspect, and clean. If you're in doubt I can sell you a good used one for $40. PM me if interested.

If dissasembly is the answer, I am okay with that. I think the po fell off , like 5 mph type, in the rain at the track, he never got back on. perhaps this led to moisture in the starter motor ? I will look at the manual for removal/clean up.
