MPG.....Not to bad????

Just went for a nice 2 hr round trip. Hour to Orlando to have lunch with my wife and a hour back. Total mileage 132. I filled up before I left, the trip was all HWY with the occasional stop for tolls. Just as I was getting close to home the light came on so I stopped about 5 miles from home and filled up again. Took about the same as the first fill up, 3.3. Did the math and it comes to 40 mpg on the HWY. Since buying the Hawk this was the first distance ride I have done with it. City Im getting about 30 mpg. So if the number at this point are true 35 mpg is the average between city and hwy.
Also I read the spec on the bike and it says it holds 4.23 gal. The light seems to come on about the same time and it takes 3.3 to fill at the point, am I safe to presume that there is a gal in reserve?

There might be a gallon but it can't all get used - I've found it about 15 -20 miles from when the fuel light comes on to it conking out. You might want to confirm it by experimentation (with a fuel can in reserve

Doesn't seem too bad. I'm a light skinny bugger, so I've gotten in the mid 40's for mpg., but all highway, and real easy on the throttle.

Everyone says the hawk is a pig on fuel, but I've had worse. Get on the gas, and that changes pretty quick though.

On a 100 mile MPG test at 3500 rpm (~60) in top gear, I averaged ~47 mpg, at 4500 rpm (~80) for 100 miles it dropped to ~37.

Hmmm. Interesting.

Stock gearing?

I can't see the point in anything but. This bike already has the torque curve of a farm tractor... I thought about dropping a tooth or two on the rear to see how it would do on longer rides.

hehe... might be sturring up **** talking about gearing...

Perhaps we all can talk about what oil is best, and what tires to run... lol.

Maybe an octane thread!!!

There is a ride that a group of us does pretty often, roughly 70 miles of twisty ***** out roads. I keep it above 5k the whole time, filling up first. When we get to the destination I fill back up and it costs 5-6 bucks. The math doesn't make sense to me, but i don't complain.

With normal commuting, I get a lot worse.

With normal commuting, I'm lucky to make it to 30mpg, but I only live 3 miles from work with lots of starts and stops.

That mileage test was done when it was bone stock.

Very interesting RZ. At 80mph Im running about 4200-4300. Stock gearing. Speedo is off by about 4-5 mph as well according to the mobil radar stands.

As my wife said "you didnt buy the bike for its mpg"

I was using the GPS to correct speedo. I was actually showing roughly 85 on the speedo. Give or take 3 mph as the conditions varied.

Ahh Cool. If I had a way to affix my cell I could turn on the GPS and see what my actual speed is.
Thought there was a way to correct the speedo??

Actually man, buy a tank bag at bikeweek - they are usually pretty cheap there)

If I get to make it - which it's looking like I will now - might ride up with you - I'll get a tank bag there, so nice to lay on for the longer rides;-) Driving up to Ormand beach tomorrow so I'll let you know the mileage I get, seems I'm getting 100 miles to 3.3 every fillup wiht all city driving...

Cool, Mine did well yesterday to Orlando and back. 132 on 3.3 and mine too a little over 100 in town. And yeah that is a good idea, tank bag at bike week.

Downside to the speedohealer is it screws up you odometer. They work off the same signal, and my odo is spot on, at any speed, while my speedo is off by ~8%.

I have a speedohealer that I'm not using. I just go relative to traffic. Maybe I can program it to read 1mph at an actual speed of 60mph to keep odometer mileage low

Mpg

Running at about 3500 rpm in all gears throughout the ride I normally see 40-42 mpg and some of it's highway and some of it's twisty. Stock gearing and air filter and Jardine RT1's but I don't know how the carbs are set up yet. No surging or flat spots and no soot in the muffler tips, which seems odd to me. I also have a BMC race filter that runs ok with no surging but it stalls more at stops. A lot more.

Alright. What's going on? I put the stock mufflers on and ran 2 or 3 tanks and the mpg dropped from 40-42 to 35 with driving routine the same. So with more backpressure the economy dropped. What happened? I'm flummoxed.

I am 6' around 200lbs, the Hawk is a 98 with 2 Bro slip on's, K&N Air Filter, Dynajet Stage 1 jet kit, 1 tooth down on front sprocket and I ride mostly back roads with some highway and average about 40MPG. The most I got on a tank was 148 miles but I think it was a fluke.
