So I dropped by bike for the first time today. There was a car parked next to where I usually do so I had to park at a 90 degree angle to how I usually do. Well when I got off my bike I dropped my keys and when I bent over to get them my bike tipped.

I got it up pretty quickly, but not before the damage was done. There was a huge oil slick from where it was downed and oil coming out of the crankcase.

I cleaned the slick and examined the crankcase and here's what I found:







Pretty nasty huh?

Needless to say I'm in the market for a new crankcase cover.

Oh, and an oil change.

If any of y'all have an extra cover sitting around that's in good shape, I'll be happy to buy it off your hands.

 

Ouch, just from dropping the bike ? I recently replaced a case on my VFR when I finally got tired of the tiny bit of oil that weeped out. Mine had been like that since the previous owner laid it over and it slid along the ground on that side.

Add a coolant change and new gasket to your shopping list

You might want to add a carbon cover and some hi-temp silicone adhesive just in case...

Not a bad idea on the cover, will it fit with a lower fairing?

 

A lower fits on mine with the cover installed but then it might depend on the particular type. I'll post a pic tomorrow as it's night here in the UK.

Wow that's some darn luck there, you must've hit it on just the right,(or should I say wrong), place. I've tipped mine over in the garage, fell over hitting sand at 15mph' crashed on the track at about 50-60 bike flipping and all I have are scratches! Sorry about your luck but thanks for the post other wise I wouldn't have seen the CF cover.

 

Glad some good came of it! I know the previous owner dropped it, it has a few scratches on both sides, so I wouldn't be surprised if there was some previous damage

 

Wickey-where'd you get that CF cover? My bike needs a little more bling now that it's VTROM for Sept. I'm thinkin' a few more billet pieces also.

 

You will also need a new mechanical seal with the right cover as they usually do not come with one. If you need your bike, I used high temp jb-weld or something similar on mine before I replaced it (after laying it down again from a 5 foot long 5 inch deep pot hole) just to get it running again. For that, you will need to take it off, sand down the outside and the inside after removing ALL OIL. Obviously this fix doesnt need to look perfect, but its good to get a seal from both sides. The cover mainly protects the internals, and there is a minor amount of pressure that goes through there (Ran mine for 4 miles with a hole to get it home).

 

I'm considering having it welded, especially if that's cheaper than buying one. Either way I'm gonna have to order a new gasket for it.

Also last time I had my cover of A can of gasket remover and a scraper helped get the old one off, then using some Liquid Gasket latest type Yamabond Hugh bottle to secure one side (be very careful around the coolant drain hole), while a litttle grease on the other - to help split the cover from the case if I have to take it off in the future,

If it fits with a SharkSkinz I'm going to be ordering one, that was the lower I wanted anyways.

 

It's adding a couple of mm of thickness over the covers... Why on earth would it affect fitment of a lower in any way?

If a lower is that snug onto the engine covers, it would likely make all kinds of rattly noise as it makes contact, and also create some nice rub marks...

Just got back from the mechanic's. He said it's possible, but I'd be looking at about $100. E-bay has some for only $20 more than that, so I think I'm going to get a new one.

 

Wicky I'm looking pretty seriously at getting those covers, one for my crankcase and one for my alternator, but I have a question. I'm in the US and the ebay auction is listed in euros. How does that work out?
