Knocking sound when backing up

So, my bike makes a knocking noise when I push it backwards. The sound doesn't occur when moving forward. I've put it up on a rear lift and spun the wheel backwards - no knocking. Weird, eh? This has been going on for some time and I haven't had any trouble with it. Still, it doesn't seem right.

Anyone had the same noise? Ideas what it might be? Wheel bearing? (but then why no noise when moving forward?) Rear brake pads? (but then why no noise when lifted?)

I'd appreciate some Forum wisdom.

I know this one. It is your chain being too loose. If you look down you will see it dragging on something when you go backwards. (exhaust in my case, might be swing arm though too)

Or the rear brake bracket isn't mated to the stop right, although you will see the whole thing move if thats the case

Okay, that's what I'll check next. It makes sense but I'm still skeptical ... the sound isn't continuous and it's deeper (different timbre - remember junior high music? , and I keep an eye on the chain. But that's the most logical next step.

I'll report back.
