Engine cuts off when I shift to 1st

Went to garage this evening to install new battery. I started the bike, I let it warm up and then I try to shift to 1st...but engine immediately dies...tried it for two times. Anybody has an idea why this happen?

Is the sidestand down? That could do it.

Don't sweat it....I did the same thing right after I bought mine and stopped for gas. Killed it twice and a guy in car next me yells "put your kickstand up"....just a little embarrassing.

Same here! VTR was the first bike i had with a kickstand switch. All of my prior bikes never had that.

So i go to buy the used VTR at a car lot. She looks so good and starts right up. Everytime i put her in first she dies. I felt so stupid after about the forth or fifth time and then i figured it out.

I was thinking oh no this bike is a lemon when in reality the lemon was the one sitting on the seat.

I did the same thing when I was sixteen, but with a car. My first car had a manual tranny and the second an automatic. The first time I drove it, I drove it to work and parked it, came out that nite to leave and it wouldn't start. No lights or anything. I called my dad and he was on his way to check it out. While we were waiting, one of the guys I work with asked what was going on, I told him so he said to let him take a look. He gets it puts the car in park ( left it it drive) and starts it right up. Felt pretty stupid, especially after my dad drove 40 minutes to help, got there and it was running and found out why.

At least you didn't do it, three or four times, in the middle of a 7/11 parking lot with cars waiting for you to get the #uck out of the way. I know "somebody" who did that once.

The HD V-Rod doesn't have that switch. A bunch of us were sitting at the DQ one night. Guy rolls up on a new (at that time) V-Rod. So we're shootin' the **** for a while and he goes to start it up for all of us to hear. Keep in mind that he's parked right behind this guy's sportbike. He lets starts it, lets the clutch out and the bike leaps forward into the other bike. The other bike comes to rest with it's front wheel against the parking block and the sidestand angled towards the back wheel! Another inch and it would have fallen onto another sportbike next to it.

The kicker: The guy rented the V-Rod for the day! What a poser!
