Sorry if I'm too **** about this but I don't want to mess up some electrical part on my bike due to my own stupidity if I can avoid it by asking questions of you guys. So, I am just setting the TPS on my 2003 Superhawk and the various posts call for 500 ohms +/- 10 ohms per Factory Pro's instructions. I'm using a nice new digital multi meter with multiple resistance range settings and I fabbed up a sanitary test harness that registers 0 resistance and I can't set my TPS to 500 ohms. I CAN easily set it to 500 k ohms which converts to 50,000 ohms. Is k ohms the unit that everyone is referring to when they say "500 ohms"? And they just assume that anyone with a hint of brains knows that it really means "k ohms" or am I doing something grossly wrong her? What did I miss?

Well, I moved out of the direct sun and now I can read the decimal point on the multi meter! It actually shows .500 k ohms which equals 500 ohms. But for some reason, when I change the multi meter resistance range setting from k ohms to ohms I can't get any reading at all just the letters "OL" and the multi meter manual is at the other house where I borrowed it from.... Why can't I display 500 ohms but I can display .500 k ohms? Electricity is strange white man's magic.....

 

Check your connection and make sure you are plugged into the correct holes on the multimeter and on the throttle position sensor.

 

Connected to top and middle pins on the TPS, connections are good so I gotta guess that in the "ohm" setting the range on this particular multi meter doesn't go up to 500 hence I have to switch over to the "k ohm" setting and display 500 ohm as ".500 k ohm"

 

That should read close enough

 

A lot of DVMs will have specific ranges that they work in, and OL or OR will mean that it's out of its selected range. For example, you might have a DVM that will read 0.2-200Ω, the next range being 2-2000Ω, then 20-20000Ω, and so on. Some of the nicer ones are autoranging.
