chain lube
chain lube
Hey Guys,
What is everyone using for chain lube? I know I have opened a can of worms with this question here, but I am just wondering. I have been using bel-ray chain lube for several year now & was thinking about trying something else out. Looking sor something that doesn't fling off but wount build up behind the front sprocket cover either.
Thanks

By asking this question, you've put your head above the edge of the trench, shone a spotlight on it and shouted "Shoot me!". It's a reasonable question and you're a polite person but, if I were you, I'd post that I was possessed momentarily by an evil spirit and that I'll do a search using the keywords "chain" and "lube".
I've tried a few different products. Nowhere near all of them, but out of the one's I have tried, this combo works the best for me. I clean it before every lubing to avoid build-up. My gold chain always looks and works great.
Torco Power Slide. I've tried at least 6 different brands, and I like this one the best. No overspray, doesn't fling and doesn't collect dirt. And you can still see that I have a gold chain after several hundred miles.
I also liked the Honda HP Chain Lube, but my dealer quit carrying it. They only carry the Honda HP with Moly now, and that stuff really sucks...tons of black overspray.

ive got bel ray, the chain wax in the above pic and lately ive been using repsol chain lube, it smells like bearing grease but seems to work the best and last the longest of the three, well last the longest it all works the same. just dont get it on parts it doesnt belong on my buddy got some on his shock and it turned parts of it green, lol. it came off but was funny to see.
I've used just about every chain product at one time or another including boiling chains in a bucket of Duckhams chain grease! That was 300 years before the invention of o-rings and aerosols.
Right now my favorites are the Bel-Ray super clean as stated above and Dupont Chain Wax which I have been using for about a year. The problem I have with the Dupont is that it is so thin and invisible that it appears that the chain has no lube on it. It won the webbikeworld chain lube test though.

Chain lube, tires and oil are religions in the motorcycle world. Everyone has their beliefs but in reality, name brand products are about the same for 99% of riders but you can choose to believe and apply them as you choose and be pretty safe using name brand products from reputable sources.
The key is to regularly clean the chain AND use the least amount of chain lube and it only requires a small amount to do the job.

ride for a few minutes to warm up the chain (helps release old junk and let the new lube seep in better). Then take a chain brush to it to remove the big stuff, then a rag for whats left over. Then I WD40 it to push moisture out and finally Dupont chain wax. I try not to lube a dirty chain with wax, it tends to lock in some dirt and grime...not really good for the ole chain.
Scott Oiler & Scott Oil. When I run low I mix o-ring safe chain saw blade lube & Marvel Mystery Oil to the same viscosity as the Scott Oil. Dries to a fine powder that wipes off easy and clean once, twice or thrice a season with kerosene with rags & old tooth brushes. I usually get 20~25k miles out of a good quality x-ring 530 chain (DID, RK, EK, Regina, etc) with new sprockets (Sunstar, JT, AFAM steel 43T/16T) but next time I may try a 520 and Super Sprocket rear.
