suggested exhaust
Hi guys,
I just bought a 2001 superhawk and really enjoy riding the bike. I like the sound it has, previous owner modified the stock exhaust, but I am kind of interested in purchasing a new exhaust for it. What exhaust would you recommend for the superhawk ? Not looking to silence it at all. If I end up getting new exhaust will I have to jet it? Thanks!

What kind of budget are you working with?
Slipons range from $250-$700+ for this bike so if you have a budget limit we can help you more specifically otherwise your going to get almost the whole range of available slipons with your original question...
And there are only a few that will be quieter than debaffled stockers(most of those would have a removable silencer tip), so how loud you want to go would be a better question...

if you go to this web page
they say that they tested different exhausts on the VTR and they ended up choosing Hindle pipes. on the dyno, when jetted correctly, the showed a 10ps(9.8 hp) increase in the midrange with an average of a 3hp gain everywhere else through the rev range. luckily the PO shelled out the cash for a full hindle system, not just slip ons =]
but if your going for cost effective then i hear the Danmotos are pretty good. they sound good too plus they have quiet a number of styles

And you don't have to rejet. Your Hawk won't turn into a POS that won't run. I went several years w/o touching a thing after carbon Jardine highs. Optimal? No.
And poultrylady (lol) makes a good point. Carbon cans on a large twin (or any bike for that matter)won't last forever. Several of us can attest to that.
Where you from thill? Welcome to the forum!

Dans
I've had a pair of DanMoto's in titanium for 3 years, they don't "burn through" like the carbon cans. Fantastic sound. I didn't rejet and it doesn't fart or pop any more than with the original exhaust. Heads will turn.

Carbon cans won't burn through if you keep the packing healthy. Dan-Moto Texalium cans might be more resistant to burn through like the metal cans, but made out if fiberglass stay cool to the touch like carbon cans. Mine turned a nice bronze color. They are relatively thin and short, and therefore don't have much sound dampening.
If you want loud and nasty, go with the Dan-Motos, if you want to mellow them out, get the slip-in baffles, and cut the ends off to make the baffles pass-through. They will get rid if the nasty "crack" sound but leave them loud.

Btw, even the un-cheap TBR pipes could need repacking in 5000 miles as recommended here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nnnLcYa6_T4

Just got some delkvic 14" polished cans, love the sound, will do a minor rejet but it runs like 95% like it did stock.
Cheap cans, good quality for sure. Better than danmoto, but not as expensive as yoshis.
Haven't tried without the baffle yet, good loudness as is.

I had a set of Carbon Danmoto's and they literally fell apart after 1 year. definitely junk and they wont stand behind anything!!
My 98 had the Jardine high mounts and I loved them so I bought another set for my '03

Yeah, their carbons are not good for our bikes. Any others will last longer, but the carbon cans are too brittle, and the packing too thin to protect the carbon. Our bikes beat them to death quickly. The metal cans won't have similar issues, and the fiberglass cans they call Texalium or Tex GP, have held up well for 7500+ hard miles. Fiberglass being much more flexible than carbon fiber.
