SSS- what's the point?
I just read the primer on adding the single sided swingarm. My question is what's the purpose besides making it look trick? Or is that the only reason? It looks awesome, but does it improve anything performance or function-wise? Thanks.

But heavier isn't good though, is it?
A related question: I see people putting 954 or RC forks on the front to upgrade. But, is the rear capable of handling the new performance of the front end; is the stock swingarm good enough? Will a shock upgrade simply take care of the matter?

Heavier isn't better. For the same strenght, SSS need to be about 2/3's heavier than a standard double sided swingarm. So if our swingarm is good for say 80 Ft lbs and 120 HP, and it weighs 15 lbs, a SSS would need to weigh 25lbs to have the same strength.
The only folks I've heard of that have upgrade/braced the rear swingarm have been Big Valley Honda. They do offer their upgraded rear swingarm for sale, but it sure ain't cheap! They also heavily modified their engine, and used the bike ONLY for racing, so it saw much harder/more severe use than streetbikes/occasional track days.

Pro's: Wheel changes are a breeze. When I had VFR's, I even looked forward to them (seriously). Chain tensioning is a no brainer. No alignment headaches. Cleaning/air pressure checks are easier. Oh yeah, looks neater than *#^$.......
Cons': Heavier to achieve the same rigidity and more expensive to produce (they say). Will lengthen your wheelbase if adding a VFR SSS to a VTR (well that's good if you drag racing or don't like wheeling).
I like to do it but I have other priorities.

Re: SSS- what's the point?
The pros seem really good, but then I read words like fabricate and I realize I actually like to ride my bike... when I have to fabricate, one thing leads to another and pretty soon it's stripped to the frame and I can't remember how to put it back together.
I've been looking for info on the bigger gas tank as well, which I guess is euro only, and whether it retrofits on previous models. Haven't found much except the specs on the honda uk site.
