Rear Suspension Upgrade

Hi everyone my questions for today are about Penske rear shock that i just bought of Ebay, privious owner claimed appr 3000 mls used on it and srung weight had setted up for 190lbs rider so do i have to replace spring for it or can i just back off, decrease preload on it? how much spring replacement would cost? who should i order from how to install a new spring? do i have to recharge nitro again? ah, I remembered on some thread Greg N(our Admin) wrote that org for VTR rear shock set up for 185 lbs then if i keep the spring (190) and just tune rebound, compression damping do i still have any advantages of this Penske shock. My VTR forks have RT spring, g-valve Rt oil, set up 155 lbs preload up 4. Thanks ahead of time for any help.

I also have a penske. honestly you best bet in terms of saving you time and headache is to find the closet race shop that works on penskes and have them set up the whole suspention for you what I learn is is'ts all about ballance between the forks and the shock and depending on what you want it to do the smallest changes make a big differance. but find a race shop that is used to setting up bike for the track because they'll have more experance getting the bike to do what you want it to do then some dealer tech.

get it set up right. spring change probably less than 100 dollars. If the rate is wrong you'll never get the sag set up right or the shock in the best working range for you. You got a great shock now, so maximize it.

I was scoping that one out too, was hoping that the misspelling of the shock brand name (spelled it Penski) would allow it to fly under the radar so to speak. Congrats on the shock, it's a nice looking piece

P.S. there is one another Penske (yes, Penske this time) shock for sale on eBay but this one is rebound adjustable only (and, in my case, doesn't ship to Canada, so he can keep it as far as I'm concerned).

cheers

The Penske has a nice wide range of adjustability to allow for a range of springs to be used. The spring change can be done by the end user. It's not a difficult task. Back off the preload almost all the way until the lower spring perch is loose. The lower perch has a slot in it that allows it to be removed. Remove the perch and the spring will slide off the end of the shock. Ensure you buy the right spring for your weight. Contact GMD Computrack, Lindemann, or Thermosman (Google) and they can get you what you need. The shock will most likely NOT need to be revalved unless you want a finer adjustment range for that spring. Most racers will want that, but if it's only a street bike then it's overkill.

I got the package yesterday the Penske shock look very nice just like pre-owner claim. I did couple of call and talk w/the Penske motorcycle susp dept they told me just put it one the bike make a few adjustments comp-reb damping and they will send me a set up date for it. According to the Tech said : my spring weight is not far off just right there of the border and so i can get away with it unless after try out some set up and still not feel please then order it for my specific spring weight. Thanks all of your gentleman for inputs and feed back.
