Bang for your buck?

Just purchased an '02, stock everything. I would like another 20 hp (ish) and take advantage ot the subdued low end growl that the bike seems to have. Anyone recommend a course of action to achieve this goal? Pipes, Jets, Sprockets?

In addition, does anyone know of an aftermarket instrument cluster that has a speedo with better visibiity. Mine goes to 180 and 60 is around 1.5" from zero at the bottom of the dial. The bike is smooth enough at speed that I know this is going to get me in trouble. I'd like a speedo read that's a little more obvious.

Adding 20hp to our engine is a fairly big task. There are lots of threads about engine mods that are good reading. IMO if you're not to worried about top end power just add 2-3 teeth to the rear sprocket. It feels like a lot more bottom end power, and is fairly cheap to do. I'm not a fan of re-jetting carbs, call me lazy, but it's just not worth it to me. I ride the hawk because I can ride 100+ per day and not pay with a sore body. I would most certianly recommend a good set of slip-ons though. They will give you a 4-6 hp gain and make it sound bad ***.

You might get 10hp from cans, jet kit, and filter, properly tuned on a dyno. Above that you will have to do cams and pistons and then try to find a full aftermarket exhaust system somewhere, as I don't believe anyone makes them anymore....maybe Akrapovic but it's like $1300.

do slipons, K&N, rejet, and hav the flywheel cut down. and go to a 520 chain set up with a bit lower gearing. it will FEEL awsome and pull lots harder, youll be getting more of the power you do have to the ground...

i cant afford big $ projects like cams and pistons at the moment so thas as far as my bike is going. i think it runs really good. once u get the boltons done JETTING correctly is the whole ticket

Cool

Where will you get to use the extra 20hp?
I would just invest in some better race tires when the stock ones wear out, IMO there is no need to upgrade engine performance when the riding skill is lacking... save your money for some track time.
