TAIL SWAPPING - REVISITED

I know that the tail swapping issue has been adressed on several other threads, but i'm either a cosmetic genius or a complete retard. i've read through the threads on swapping the tails from a rc and cbr 1000, but has anyone thought of gsxr or r1 tails. the newer gsxr and r1 tails are all cast alum. but the 00-03 gsxr 600-750 subframes are steel (aka easily modified with a welder). plus, the mount points look similar, i'm guessing completely because i don't have the measurments on either sub frame..... has anyone ever tried it? or am i a cosmetic pioneer......

I believe I've seen gsxr subframes used on custom superhawks before. And aluminum is just as easily welded as steel... but maybe I say that cause when I began learning to weld I actually started with aluminum not steel.

I'm putting a 2007 GSXR tail on my project HAWK right now... I'm just using the cast aluminum rear portion, bolted up to a chopped and welded front VTR subframe. I'll need to make a few fiberglass pieces to blend the side fairings into the frame, but it's looking pretty good right now.

If I get a chance, I'll take a photo or two.

Here's a few shots of where I'm at.... it's not as easy as I'd thought it would be, but I'm not in a rush so I do a bit of work each week if i can find the time.

I put a 05 r1 tail on mine, but i made my own subframe. The only problem i am having now, is that i don't have a rear seat or a cowl on the bike. But that is because i've been a little lazy to try to figure something out.

slowhawk, that looks really good.... p.s. i like the sssa conversion... but how do you plan to runs the exhaust, undertail? single right? or two cans like before? undertail exhaust is cool, but i don't know about messing up the good job you've done with the tail. i was also thinking of swapping to an undertail exhaust when i do the swap.... maybe i'll use a tail off something that already has undertail....

I was working on an RC51 tail swap. I simply made some Carbon fiber brackets to mount up a stock RC51 subframe. Worked like a charm. BTW... the subframe and brackets are available if anyone wants them.

That's looks real nice Fishface.... I love that the exhaust and tail have the same angle.

One question.. how's the seating position? It looks a little slanted forward... I only ask becuase my GSXR tail mod is tilted forward a bit as well, just wondering if I'm asking for trouble?

Unfortunatley no.... the past 1.5 months has been "house-time" according to my other half... seriously denting my project bike time!!!! I've traded the welder and fiberglass for demo, drywall and painting!!!

The only thing I have done is buy a carbon can for the exhaust... I'm gonna go with a very HIGH mount on the right side.... up far enough to show off the swinger hopefully. I just don't have the stomach or time to figure out a way to get the undertail CBR exhaust I wanted to use in position with all the other work that has to be done to the bike.

how is the seating position with that tail? does it sit level with the bike or is it up more like the r1 tail?

Right now it seems to be between stock and Fishfaces R1 tail. I didn't want to get very drastic in it's angle, as I wanted the seating positon to be as close as possible to stock without making the bike look wierd.
